Goals galore: Bundesliga on record pace
The new Bundesliga campaign is just four matchdays old, yet we have already seen a glut of goals. Should this trend continue, this season could enter the record books.
The new Bundesliga ball is living up to its 'Torfabrik' (Goal Factory) name. Across the opening four Bundesliga matchdays, 137 goals have been scored, a number which has been surpassed only twice in history at this point of a campaign - 140 had been netted in 1984/85, while the tally stood at 138 in 2023/24.
Even during the opening weekend, two games had six strikes each; Bayern Munich had too much for VfB Stuttgart in their 5-1 curtain-raiser, while Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt shared the spoils in an exhilarating 3-3 draw. There were three further games with five goals apiece, too; Cologne 3-2 Hoffenheim, Elversberg 3-2 Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg 4-1 Werder Bremen.
The grand total of 35 goals on Matchday 1 was surpassed the following week by one, making it the highest-scoring Matchday so far in 2026/27. The past weekend had two games that saw seven goals, as Bayern hammered Union while also keeping a clean sheet and Mainz edged a 4-3 thriller against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Across the 36 matches so far, there have been 3.8 goals per game. Should that average persist by the end of the campaign, we will have a new Bundesliga record - currently, the highest tally stands at 3.6 over the course of a whole season, with 1,097 efforts being dispatched in 306 games during 1983/84.
On an individual level, meanwhile, there are 11 players who have scored at least three goals this season. Michael Olise, Yuito Suzuki, Phillip Tietz, Younes Ebnoutalib and Patrik Schick have all found the back of the net on four occasions, while Harry Kane is amongst a group of six one further back. Schick is also the only player to score on each matchday thus far.
Interestingly, 10 teams have eight or more goals, meaning more than half the division is averaging at least two goals per game. Unsurprisingly, Bayern lead the way on 14, but Freiburg (12) and Augsburg (11) have both set club records after four fixtures.
Suzuki and Igor Matanović have been the stars of the show for Freiburg, while Michael Gregoritsch's three strikes have seen him take his overall Augsburg Bundesliga haul to 38, enough to surpass Alfreð Finnbogason as the club's all-time leading goalscorer in the top flight.
Other strikers have also enjoyed a strong start to the campaign. Niclas Füllkrug has hardly missed a beat on his return to Bremen, scoring in each of Die Werderaner's past three games, while Jonathan Burkardt has done the same for Frankfurt. Elversberg's Maurice Krattenmacher, also on three strikes, has been particularly lethal considering all of his goals have come from the bench.
Now, the 'Torfabrik' will be out of action for three weeks due to the international break. Upon the Bundesliga's return, 1983/84 may well be in this season's sights as the goals flow once again.
