Augsburg came into the game after progressing to the third round of the DFB Cup in midweek, with captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw introduced into the starting XI for his first league start of the season - one of four changes. Freiburg's head coach Julian Schuster, meanwhile, made seven changes from his side's midweek cup win over Wolfsburg.
The sides traded early half-chances, with Anton Kade heading wide and Derry Scherhant seeing an effort deflected behind for a corner. Michael Gregoritsch then tested Mio Backhaus from distance without real danger, but he soon made the breakthrough. Arijon Ibrahimović's delivery from the left found Gregoritsch at the back post, and the forward produced a delicate touch to put Augsburg in front against his former club. Freiburg's best response of the half saw Yuito Suzuki's effort blocked, while at the other end Backhaus produced a fine diving save to deny another Gregoritsch effort, ensuring Manuel Baum's men went into the interval only one goal up.
Watch: Gregoritsch denied a second of the game by Backhaus

Igor Matanović was introduced for Freiburg at half-time and had an early effort blocked. Ibrahimović, meanwhile, remained a threat for Augsburg, firing narrowly wide and forcing a save from Backhaus either side of the hour mark. Freiburg, though, found their equaliser midway through the second half, when Matanović hammered a loose ball into the back of the net from inside the area. Augsburg pushed forward in hope of restoring their advantage, with Chrislain Matsima and Uchenna Ogundu both denied late on, but it was Freiburg who struck again with just five minutes remaining. Substitute Vincenzo Grifo crossed from the left, and fellow replacement Cyriaque Irié headed home at the back post to complete the turnaround and give Freiburg all three points.
Man of the Match: Igor Matanović
Matanović was voted Man of the Match after coming off the bench to equalise for Freiburg in the 65th minute, finishing from inside the area to make it 1-1. He also had an earlier effort blocked after his introduction and topped Freiburg's fantasy manager ranking for the match.
