Watch: The stars’ winter break

This season’s winter break may have been slightly shorter than usual but the Bundesliga stars, as ever, made the most of their precious days off. Christmas and New Year were unsurprisingly the dominant themes of their social media posts, with crazy outfits aplenty on show in locations both sun-drenched and snow-covered, according to individual preference – while for some, the darts world championship in London was the only place to be. Come with us on an online winter tour.

Early Leipzig team news

Yan Diomande continues to help Ivory Coast in the defence of their Africa Cup of Nations title and will therefore be unavailable for Leipzig here. Johan Bakayoko is out, while Antonio Nusa is a doubt for this one - leaving Werner's men a little light up front. It also remains to be seen whether Lukas Klostermann features due to his recent illness.

Head-to-head

Leipzig have prevailed in each of the last two meetings between these two sides. However, they have won only one of the other five match-ups, failing to score in four of them. Prior to last season, Pauli and Leipzig had not faced off since 2016 in Bundesliga 2.

Leipzig look to hit 2026 running

Ole Werner's men ended 2025 with back-to-back defeats, but they remain in the top four going into the Bundesliga's return. Still, they have not won in their previous three away matches, so there is no guarantee they will pick up all three points here.

New St. Pauli signing debuts in friendly

New signing Tomoya Andō made his Pauli debut in a goalless draw with northern rivals Bremen. Japanese countryman Joel Fujita had the chance to secure a late win in a game dominated by the hosts and played out in front of over 25,000 fans, but substitute goalkeeper Karl Hein was equal to the task.

Cause for optimism

Pauli enjoyed a strong second half of the season in 2024/25, picking up 18 points after the winter break, just three fewer than Leipzig.

Watch: Mainz 0-0 St. Pauli - highlights

St. Pauli went into the winter break in the relegation play-off position after holding rock-bottom Mainz to a goalless draw. Unbeaten in three league games (W1, D2), Alexander Blessin's charges are a point clear of the automatic relegation zone but two adrift of outright safety.
