The next S04 youngster
For Schalke, Ron Schallenberg is missing for the first time this season, and Miron Muslić is throwing his next talent into the deep end. Paul Pöpperl (22 years old) played his first five minutes in the second division last week, and is now immediately called upon to start. He gained some professional experience in the second half of last season when he was on loan at Viktoria Köln, making nine appearances in the third division.
Egouli a good omen?
The 2.04-metre giant has only been in the Fortuna starting eleven twice before. In those two matches, Düsseldorf collected four points and conceded only one goal (2-1 in Paderborn, 0-0 against Karlsruhe).

Markus Anfang has to do without Tim Breithaupt, but can call upon Anouar El Azzouzi again, who was previously suspended due to yellow cards. Also new to the team is Elias Egouli, who replaces Moritz Heyer. A system change to a 4-2-3-1 also seems possible.

Familiar face
Fortuna head coach Markus Anfang transferred as a player from Düsseldorf to Schalke in 1997, playing alongside Youri Mulder (now director of professional football at S04), Jens Lehmann, Olaf Thon and Marc Wilmots. However, under Huub Stevens, he only made five competitive appearances.
Champions once upon a time
Fortuna became German champions for the only time in 1933, winning the final in Cologne against Schalke 3-0.
It's been a while...
The 3-1 home victory in August 2021 was Schalke's last win against Fortuna and also their only three points in eight Bundesliga 2 encounters. Schalke have lost all four away matches in Düsseldorf – nowhere else have S04 played so often in the Bundesliga 2 without earning any points.
