Few clubs in world football can match the relentless attacking output of Bayern Munich. Across different eras, generations, and tactical systems, the Bavarian giants have torn up the Bundesliga record books, especially when it comes to goals scored.

This season, Bayern's attacking trio of Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz have been almost unstoppable. Their contributions have helped fire Vincent Kompany's side to 97 goals, inevitably leading to the question of when they will break the Bundesliga goal record.

But what is the magic number? And how close have teams come before? Spoiler alert, they are all Bayern...

Bayern Munich 1971/72 - 101 goals

Head coach: Udo Lattek
Top scorers: Gerd Müller (40), Uli Hoeneß (13), Franz Roth (12)

For over 50 years, they have remained the gold standard. The most prolific Bundesliga team ever, from a time when Bayern won three consecutive European Cups. Powered by the goals of Gerd Müller - who hit a then record 40 in the Bundesliga - the Bavarians swept aside all before them in the 1971/72 season.

A remarkable 11-1 trouncing of rivals Borussia Dortmund that year also remains their biggest league win. They went on to clinch the Meisterschale by three points (from Schalke), in what was a fitting farewell to their Grünwalder Stadion before they moved to the Olympic Stadium for the season's final game, in which they took their home tally for the campaign up to a record 69 goals by scoring five against runners-up Schalke in a title decider. Uli Hoeneß netted their 100th of the season, Franz Beckenbauer the 101st and final goal.

Bayern Munich 2019/20 - 100 goals

Head coach: Niko Kovač & Hansi Flick
Top scorers: Robert Lewandowski (34), Serge Gnabry (12), Thomas Müller & Philippe Coutinho (8 each)

Nearly five decades later, Bayern hit triple digits again. A mid-season coach change - from current Dortmund boss Nico Kovać to Hansi Flick - really released the attacking shackles.

The club won a historic treble for just the second time in their history, proving to be as clinical in Europe as they were domestically, with 7-2 and 8-2 wins against Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona, respectively.

Robert Lewandowski top-scored for Bayern in the Bundesliga that season, scoring 34 of their 100 goals - just shy of the record. Thomas Müller set the all-time record for assists with 21.

Bayern Munich 2024/25 - 99 goals

Head coach: Vincent Kompany
Top scorers: Harry Kane (26), Jamal Musiala (12), Michael Olise (12)

The first season under Kompany nearly delivered another 100-goal campaign. Kane led the way with 26 goals, while summer arrival Olise chipped in with 12.

Kane sealed his first major trophy as Bayern reclaimed the Bundesliga title from Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, the Bavarian giants also equalled a Bundesliga record with 17 goals from substitutes - highlighting the depth and flexibility of Kompany’s attacking system.

Bayern Munich 2020/21 - 99 goals

Head coach: Hansi Flick
Top scorers: Robert Lewandowski (41), Thomas Müller (11), Serge Gnabry (10)

Bayern enjoyed another devastating season under Flick in 2019/20, in what would prove to be his only full campaign as Bayern head coach.

Lewandowski made history by scoring 41 goals in just 29 appearances, breaking Müller’s long-standing record with remarkable efficiency, averaging a goal every 60 minutes. Bayern scored in all 34 Bundesliga matches, underlining their relentless consistency in front of goal.

Bayern Munich 2012/13 - 98 goals

Head coach: Jupp Heynckes
Top scorers: Mario Mandžukić(15), Thomas Müller (13), Mario Gómez (11)

Bayern's first treble-winning side is arguably better known for its defensive solidity than its attacking flair, as under Jupp Heynckes they conceded just 18 goals in the Bundesliga.

However, they were no mugs going forward, with 98 goals in total in the league - scoring in all 34 games for the very first time - to set the all-time record goal difference of +80, as well as the highest points tally of all time (91).

The goals were also evenly distributed across the squad. Franck Ribéry, Thomas Müller, Mario Gómez and Mario Mandžukić all hit double figures en route to the league title.

Bayern Munich 2025/26 – 97 goals (after 27 matchdays)

Head coach: Vincent Kompany
Top scorers: Hary Kane (31), Luis Díaz (15), Michael Olise (11)

The current Bayern side could yet rewrite the record books. Kompany’s team are averaging 3.6 goals per game - the best rate in Bundesliga history - with Kane already on 31, supported by Diaz and Olise.

With seven games left to play, Kompany's men are on course to not only beat the record, but obliterate it. Four goals at Freiburg on Matchday 28 will see them match the class of 1971/72 haul with half a dozen Bundesliga matches to spare. Kane also still has Lewandowski's individual goal record of 41 in his sights. Olise is hot on Müller's assist best-mark too.

Bayern Munich 2021/22 - 97 goals

Head coach: Julian Nagelsmann
Top scorers: Robert Lewandowski (35), Serge Gnabry (14), Thomas Müller (8)

Under now Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern secured a 10th consecutive Bundesliga title in once again free-scoring style.

Lewandowski again led the scoring charts with 35 goals, while the team scored in every single league match. Curiously, they were even more deadly away from home, netting a record 49 away goals.

Wondering who the highest-scoring non-Bayern team is? That was Ernst Happel's Hamburg back in 1981/82.

Horst Hrubesch hit 27 of their 95 goals en route to the title, including four of the eight that they put past Bayern in 4-3 and 4-1 wins. Beckenbauer also played 10 times for HSV that year on his brief Bundesliga return.
