Harry Kane: The Bayern Munich striker enjoyed a superb club campaign ahead of the World Cup, including 36 goals in the Bundesliga alone. He kept on going in North America, opening the tournament with a brace against Croatia and adding a third against Panama. It was then his late double in the round of 32 that saw the Three Lions past DR Congo. The England captain stepped up with an assist in the following victory over co-hosts Mexico but was unable to get his team past Argentina and into a first final since 1966. He could still add to his numbers in the bronze medal match against France.

Michael Olise: Another Bayern star of the past campaign, Olise was the Bundesliga’s top provider with 19 assists and voted the Player of the Season. He was again indispensable for France in North America as the creative force alongside Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé, providing a tournament-leading five assists from seven appearances. He was unable to help Les Bleus in the semi-final against Spain but will look to end on a high and could still match Pelé’s 56-year record of six assists at a World Cup.

Ismael Saibari: One of the Bundesliga’s newest arrivals, Saibari joined Bayern during the tournament, where he was a leading light for Morocco. The versatile forward scored in each of the three group games against Brazil, Scotland and Haiti, plus the decisive spot-kick against the Netherlands in the round of 32. Injury forced him off after 22 minutes in the last-16 win over Canada, meaning he sat out the quarter-final exit to France, where the Atlas Lions very much missed his attacking impetus.
Gregor Kobel: The 28-year-old has been a reliable figure in goal for Borussia Dortmund for several years and has now filled the big gloves of Yann Sommer, helping Switzerland to a first quarter-final since 1954. No other Bundesliga goalkeeper went that far in this year’s tournament, as he kept two clean sheets in six games, including penalty heroics in the last-16 shootout against Colombia.
Deniz Undav: The VfB Stuttgart striker enjoyed an excellent club campaign, reaching the DFB Cup final and finishing second behind Kane in the Bundesliga’s scoring chart with 19 goals. And the 29-year-old proved vital for Germany at the World Cup, getting a goal and two assists off the bench in the opening 7-1 win over Curaçao. He then repeated the heroics off the bench against Ivory Coast with a brace in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory, but he and the team struggled to make an impact against Ecuador and in the last-32 elimination at the hands of Paraguay.
Johan Manzambi: Manzambi was already one of the revelations of last season with Freiburg in the Bundesliga and UEFA Europa League, and he continued his breakout year at the World Cup. He proved the Swiss hero off the bench with his double against Bosnia and Herzegovina before bagging a goal and an assist when starting the victory over Canada. The 20-year-old again provided a crucial assist against Algeria, meaning he was involved in five of Switzerland’s 10 World Cup goals. Perhaps they could’ve gone even further than the quarters if not for his injury…

Malik Tillman: Tillman enjoyed a solid maiden Bundesliga campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, scoring six goals and getting an assist in 29 league outings. The 23-year-old continued to shine at the World Cup with co-hosts USA, setting up a goal in the 4-1 win over Paraguay before netting his first goals on the biggest stage with two direct free-kicks against Bosnia and Belgium.

Dayot Upamecano: The centre-back was one of the pillars of Bayern’s excellent campaign, making him an undisputed first choice at the back for Didier Deschamps’ France at the World Cup. The 27-year-old has started all seven matches so far and is yet to receive a card thanks to his reading of the game and pace. Les Bleus had enjoyed a winning run to the semis, including four clean sheets in six, but were unable to keep out Spain.
