After ten substitute appearances, it comes as something of a surprise that veteran Cristian Gamboa is in the starting line-up for the first time this season, and indeed for the first time in over a year (his last appearance was in February 2024), replacing VfL's top assist provider Felix Passlack.

Is there light at the end of the tunnel?

Bochum start the day five points back from the relegation/promotion playoff place of 16th and 10 off the outright safety of 15th. Defeat today would confirm their place in the bottom three but victory would give them a real chance of survival. Union, meanwhile, have successfully retained their Bundesliga status and will now be hoping to finish as high as possible come Matchday 34.

"Bochum will be attacking and aggressive, there will be a heated atmosphere, but there's a lot at stake, of course. Away you'll always have 80% of the stadium against you, that's normal in the Bundesliga. You shouldn't expect anything else. So you need to be clever, and hopefully the players can take the positives from the previous games forward into this one."

As it stands

Union are assured of their place in next season's Bundesliga, thanks to their 13-point cushion on the bottom three heading into the final four games of the season. Bochum, on the other hand, are deep in the relegation mire. They're currently second from bottom, two points behind Heidenheim, who occupy the relegation play-off place. With a 10-point deficit on 15th, outright safety is all but beyond them.

The DFB (German Football Association) awarded Bochum three points and a 2-0 win following the club's appeal against the match-interrupted 1-1 draw at Union Berlin on Matchday 14. Bochum goalkeeper Patrick Drewes was hit by a lighter thrown from the crowd, leading to a lengthy delay in proceedings. Both sets of players walked off the pitch before emerging minutes later. However, Drewes did not return for the remainder, forcing Bochum to put striker Philipp Hofmann in goal as they had already used up all of their allotted substitutions. Both teams then decided not to attack as the game ended one apiece.
