Full-time: HSV 2-1 Heidenheim

The Hanseatic hosts survive a late scare to hold onto their lead, which sees them claim their first victory in Germany's top-flight for seven years! Philippe's second half finish ultimately proved decisive after Kölle's late consolation cancelled out Vušković's opener. Heidenheim will ultimately rue their missed opportunites, although Heuer Fernandes was in inspired form between the Hamburg sticks.

Woodwork!

Almost immediately, HSV have the opportunity to kill the game off. Baldé brings a ball down excellently under pressure from Ramaj. He tees up Glatzel, who essentially has an open goal, but the striker's first time effort rattles the crossbar instead.

On his debut!

Following a corner from the left, HSV win the first ball, clearing it to the edge of the box. Traoré hits it on the volley into a sea of bodies, and Kölle just manages to get something on it to steer it past Heuer Fernandes. Can Heidenheim steal a point here?

Hamburg have the lower xG of the two sides, but have scored a fair number of goals as their chances would reflect. On the other hand, Heidenheim have been very unfortunate to have not found the back of the net.

Against his former club

Polzin makes his final changes of the game, bringing on Mikelbrencis and former Heidenheim striker Glatzel to see this one out.

Wagner takes

Heidenheim have a corner from the right. Wagner floats the ball in with his left foot, and Mainka gets his head to it, but can only steer it wide.
79'

Debuts late on here

Wagner and Kölle, who have just been introduced for Heidenheim, are making their first ever appearances in the Bundesliga. HSV also made a change, bringing on Rössing-Lelesiit for Vieira.

Would've been some goal!

Vieira finds himself with time on the ball about 35 yards from goal. He opts to shoot, unleashing a venomous, left-footed effort towards the top right corner. It's not far away either; the ball whistles past the post, to the relief of Ramaj.
camera-photo

The goalscorer departs

Merlin Polzin opts to use his bench for the first time this afternoon. Goalscorer Philippe departs alongside Dompé, to be replaced by Sambi Lokonga and Baldé, as Polzin seems to be looking for added stablility.
71'

Across goal

Once again, HSV carve Heidenheim open with just a couple of passes. A Philippe backheel releases Königsdörffer, who bursts into the box before aiming for the far corner with a driven low shot, but Ramaj is equal to the effort.
69'

Double change

Schmidt goes to the bench again, introducing Schimmer and Busch for Schöppner and Gimber as his side now chase a larger deficit.
67'

Vieira goes for the spectacular

Following a deflected Philippe cross, the ball drops for Vieira, who goes for an acrobatic effort from inside the Heidenheim box. He connects with it well, but it's just wide.

Tails up

HSV are now playing with real confidence. Most recently, Philippe's attempted cross is blocked, but falls to Königsdörffer, who hits it on the volley. However, his snapshot is just off target.

Philippe makes it two!

No goals in three games and now two in one game for Hamburg! Following a quick free-kick, Vieira plays a one-two with Gocholeishvili before cutting the ball back into the path of Philippe from the byline. The Frenchman calmly strokes it home to double his side's advantage with his first ever Bundesliga goal.

Blasted over

Ibrahimović shoots from range, which Heuer Fernandes can only parry into the path of Conteh. The speedster hits the rebound first time, but can't keep it down as he skies a great opportunity for the equaliser.
55'

First change

Frank Schmidt looks to add more attacking impetus as his side chase a one-goal deficit. The more attacking-minded Beck replaces Kerber.

Dompé lets fly

Hamburg go forward with real intent. A ball over the shoulder of Dompé is brought down superbly by the Frenchman, who beats Traoré before blasting an effort at the near post. Ramaj parries it, but only as far as Remberg, who also hits one, but this time the Heidenheim keeper smothers it.
49'

Stings the palms

Kaufmann pounces on a loose pass at the back from Omari before letting a shot fly towards the near post, from where Heuer Fernandes beats it away. In the aftermath, Vieira is caught just after clearing the ball and is in considerable discomfort. He has since left the field to receive treatment.
47'

Early stoppage

Almost immediately after the restart, Conteh stays down following a firm but fair challenge on the winger. He receives treatment for a short while, but is back to his feet now.

Half-time: Hamburg 1-0 Heidenheim

Hamburg's first Bundesliga goal of the 2025/26 campaign sees the Red Shorts heading in at the break here with the advantage, thanks to Vušković's clinical effort. The early exchanges were tentative, and Heuer Fernandes had to be called upon multiple times, but despite Heidenheim's early pressure, Frank Schmidt's side have not yet properly managed to break HSV down.

End-to-end

The goal has blown this game wide open. Immediately after taking the lead, HSV nearly concede after a header back to Heuer Fernandes is too short. Kaufmann pounces, sending the ball into the box where a teammate is waiting, but HSV manage to clear the follow-up effort off the line. Immediately, they counter, which results in Philippe's cross being sent in just too high for Königsdörffer to be able to reach with his head. If it was a little lower, that would've been a golden chance for a second...

Vušković breaks the deadlock!

It's the defender who scores Hamburg's first Bundesliga goal in seven years and the Volksparkstadion goes ballistic. Jean-Luc Dompé takes the free-kick, firing it into the wall. A scramble ensues, culminating in Gocholeishvili's deflected shot falling at Vušković's feet, who fires home.

Great position

Conteh fouls Vieira right on the edge of the Heidenheim penalty area rather accidentally after slipping. Vieira needs treatment following the collision, but HSV are awarded a free-kick in a really dangerous position.

Free header

An outswinging corner comes in from the left for Heidenheim, courtesy of Ibrahimović. Kaufmann rises in the middle to meet it, but his unchallenged header ends up in the stands.

Industrious Elfadli

HSV's No.8 has started well here, frequently breaking down Heidenheim attacks before immediately looking to see if a pass is on from out the back to start Hamburg's build-up play.

Huge chance again!

From the resultant corner taken by Muheim, Vušković sneaks into the six yard box unmarked and meets the inswinger on the volley. However, he can't keep it on target and blazes it over the bar from close range.
27'

So nearly the opener!

Vieira wins the ball back high up the pitch and immediately picks out Königsdörffer, who finds himself in a one-on-one with Ramaj, but his chipped effort is tipped over the bar by the the goalkeeper's head.

First goal remains elusive

HSV are one of just two Bundesliga sides to have not yet managed to find the back of the net so far this season - the other being Gladbach. The home fans will no doubt be desperate to see their side score this afternoon, but as of yet, their wishes have not been granted.
23'

Elfadli booked

HSV's No.8 is the first player of the afternoon to go into the book after his unfair challenge on Kaufmann prevented a Heidenheim counter-attack.
21'

Blocked by Mainka

Omari drives up from defence before slipping Vieira through in the right channel. The Portuguese's shot is blocked before it can reach Ramaj, though.
19'

Heuer Fernandes again

Schöppner combines well with Conteh down the left for the visitors. The winger backheels the ball into the path of Ibrahimović, who strikes one from the edge of the box, again calling Heuer Fernandes into action. But, the HSV keeper rises to the challenge and beats it away to safety.
18'

In from Muheim

Hamburg's stand-in captain takes a free-kick from near the right touchline. The Swiss international swings in a teasing ball with his left foot, which finds Omari's head, but the defender can't manage to guide his header on target.

Schöppner!

This time Föhrenbach sets up Conteh, whose cross to the near post is hit by Schöppner. His attempt toward the left corner is denied by Heuer Fernandes at the cost of a corner kick, but Heidenheim don't manage to capitalise on the set-piece.
11'

Traoré forces the corner

The full-back gets very high up the pitch for the visitors, his cross taking a deflection and earning Heidenheim yet another corner. Dorsch takes it short to Föhrenbach, who fires a cross in finding Kerber, whose header forces a great reaction save out of Heuer Fernandes.
6'

Through to Vieira

Dompé drops his shoulder and cuts in off the left flank before slipping a ball through to Vieira, who finds himself in a good position on the edge of the box, but the Arsenal loanee's subsequent effort is blocked at source.
5'

Another corner

Heidenheim are applying early pressure here. Ibrahimović goes short from the first corner, which is intercepted by the hosts, who concede yet another. This time, he swings it in towards the front post, where HSV head it clear.
3'

Well timed

Traoré intercepts a loose ball to Dompé down Heidenheim's right flank and instantly looks to launch a counter-attack. He plays Conteh down the line, but Elfadli, sliding in from behind, times his tackle to perfection, conceding a corner in the process. The visitors don't make anything of the resultant set-piece, though.

More on that Hamburg team

Similarly, Merlin Polzin makes four changes to his side that were thrashed 5-0 at the hands of Bayern last time out. Elfadli, Gocholeishvili, Philippe, and Dompé come in for Soumahoro, Mikelbrencis, Capaldo, and Rössing-Lelesiit, all of whom drop to the bench.

More on that Heidenheim team

Frank Schmidt names a much-changed Heidenheim line-up to the one he fielded in the 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 3. It's the four changes for the visitors here, as Föhrenbach, Dorsch, Conteh, and Kaufmann all come in for Paqarada (out with a knee injury), Honsak (out with a muscular issue), Beck (benched), and Zivzivadze, who serves a three-game suspension after receiving a red card last time out.

Merlin Polzin on facing Heidenheim

"Frank Schmidt has been Heidenheim’s coach for 18 years and has done an incredible job. At HSV, we have the utmost respect for the work he’s done and the journey the club has been on. We’ve had plenty of tough and intense battles with Heidenheim in the past, and it’s always clear to see how they want to play."

Frank Schmidt on facing Hamburg

"HSV is a big club, has a very big fanbase, and will throw everything at us to earn their first points in the Bundesliga. At the same time, as always, this is also an opportunity for us. We don't need to think so much about how things have gone in the past, or how our opponents viewed us in the past. We now have to get back to a point where people can clearly see what we stand for. For that, we need we need to fight for 90 minutes plus stoppage time."

Another milestone for timeless Schmidt

Schmidt has now been Heidenheim's manager for a staggering 18 years, a number that ranks him as the longest-serving manager in world football. When Schmidt took the helm, Heidenheim were playing in the fifth tier of German football, and now they are Bundesliga regulars that even qualified for European football at the end of the 2023/24 season.
