All over!

The three points and local bragging rights are St. Paul's! The visitors have beaten their local rivals thanks to goals from Dźwigała and Hountondji either side of half-time, with Gocholeishvili's second-half red card all but ending Hamburg's hopes of a route back into the game.

The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).

Half-time: Hamburg 0-1 St. Pauli

Dźwigała's goal separates the two teams at the break, but the visitors may feel disappointed not to be 2-0 up at the halfway mark. Hountondji had a good opportunity to get a shot away on the stroke of half-time but chose to pass, rather than let fly himself. His ball across the face of goal failed to find a team-mate and Hamburg were able to clear.

Should it be 2-0? Pereira Lage links up brilliantly with Hountondji and Sinani, who feeds his team-mate with a perfectly weighted return pass. Pereira Lage only has the goalkeeper to beat but fails to direct his shot on target.

Eric Smith on the derby

“I think it's absolutely the highlight game for us this season as it always is when we are able to play against them in a league game. It's very important and I think we want to go back there and do what we didn't succeed in doing last time we were there and win the game. I think for everyone and the city as a whole; we know it's the biggest game there is for us. We are very excited."

Watch: Hamburg derby - A game steeped in history

They may be city neighbours back together in the top flight for the first time in 14 years, but HSV and St. Pauli are worlds apart in how they view the game.
camera-photo

Alexander Blessin on facing HSV

"They wanted to make adjustments going into this season and they have succeeded in doing so. Gladbach found few opportunities. Their play was too slow and lethargic, whereas HSV did well and deserved the point they got. They want to create specific situations in specific areas of the pitch; it’s important for them to shut down the middle of the park. For us, the task is to find space and to take up specific positions, but at the same time remaining in a good defensive structure."
camera-photo

Merlin Polzin on facing St. Pauli

"The average number of goals they conceded last season speaks for itself. Over the past few years, something has really grown there. A clear plan is being followed. Despite all the drama and emotion that a derby brings, it will also be a very interesting match in terms of pure football. The key for us will be to defend well whilst also finding solutions against their compact defensive lines so that we can be dynamic in our offensive play."

New faces

Both teams started five new outfield signings on the opening matchday.
camera-photo

Keepers to the fore

Daniel Heuer Fernandes was voted Man of the Match for his four saves to earn HSV a point at Gladbach. Pauli's Nikola Vasilj (pictured) also made four saves in the 3-3 draw with Dortmund, including a Serhou Guirassy penalty. The Bosnian likewise saved a penalty in the most recent derby, denying Ludovit Reis in May 2024.
camera-photo

A long time coming

This is the first Hamburg derby in the Bundesliga since 2010/11. Of the 16 played at this level, HSV have won eight. Pauli's only two wins were the very first top-flight meeting in 1977 and the most recent in 2011.

HSV are unbeaten in the last three match-ups, with Pauli last winning in 2022/23 - a 3-0 victory at the Millerntor. They also met numerous times in the pre-Bundesliga Oberliga Nord and Hamburg city leagues.
