Summer signings Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown star as Bayern Munich down RB Leipzig in pre-season test

Bayern Munich maintained their impressive pre-season record with a 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena. Nathaniel Brown netted his first goal for the Bavarians since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the summer, whilst Ismael Saibari marked his debut with a stunning assist for Jamal Musiala.

In front of near-full crowd at the Allianz Arena, it came as little surprise that Vincent Kompany's men started the stronger of the two sides. They quickly established an early lead after a defensive mix-up at the back for Leipzig resulted in a one-on-one for Luis Díaz. It was a chance the Colombian winger took with aplomb as he curled a lethal finish past Maarten Vandevoordt.

Bayern fell into their rhythm, dominanting possesion for much of the first half and taking a deserved lead in at the break. However, after the restart, Leipzig flew out of the traps seemingly with a point to prove. Half-time substitute Johan Bakayoko went close three times before Brajan Gruda equalised with a sumptuous volley.

Parity would not remain for long though, as minutes later, Aleksandar Pavlović slipped Brown clean through on goal, with the former Eintracht Frankfurt man nutmegging Vandevoordt to claim his first goal in a Bayern shirt on his Allianz debut.

Kompany then made wholesale changes, introducing - among others - Jamal Musiala, whilst also handing a first appearance to Saibari. The subtitutions would ultimately pay dividends in the game's closing stages, as Saibari danced past multiple defenders in the Leipzig box before teeing up Musiala for Bayern's third of the afternoon.

Despite an impressive showing - particularly from his new signings - there will be cause for concern for Kompany, however, given that Konrad Laimer, Minjae Kim and Musiala all had to leave the field throughout the game with injuries.

At full-time it's hosts Bayern who claim victory thanks to second-half strikes from Brown and Musiala. Leipzig flew out the traps in the second half with a point to prove, equalising early through Gruda before Brown re-established his side's lead with his first goal in a Bayern shirt. Saibari was also handed his first minutes in the jersey of the record champions, immediately making an impact with a superb assist for Musiala's late goal. Despite the victory, there will be injury concerns for Kompany's men, given that Laimer, Kim and Musiala all had to leave the field with injuries throughout the afternoon.

A huge cheer goes up around the Allianz as Musiala gets his goal - but what about the assist from Saibari! The Moroccan international receives the ball on the left side of the Leipzig penalty area, where he glides past two defenders before teeing up Musiala on the edge of the box. Bayern's No.10 opens his body up and curls an effort to the right side of the goal. His shot takes a big deflection on its way past Vandevoordt before nestling in the bottom corner.

Immediate impact

Leipzig start the second half on the front foot and it's the substitute, Bakayoko, who immediately makes his presence felt with a long‑ranged effort, forcing Neuer into a fingertip save to guide the ball over the bar. Leipzig don't manage to make anything of the corner, however.

At the interval, it's hosts Bayern who lead courtesy of Luis Díaz's early strike. The Bavarians were initially slow to get into their stride owing to a relentless Leipzig press, but, following the unfortunate injury to Konrad Laimer. 19-year-old Tim Binder has caught the eye in particular for Vincent Kompany's men, as has Laimer's replacement, Sacha Boey. Leipzig found their attacking threat late on in the half, going closest to finding an equaliser through an Ezechiel Banzuzi header, but Martín Demichelis will no doubt want to see more from his team going forward after the break.

A high, deep ball towards the far post finds Baku, who improvises superbly to get a shot away on the volley. The angle is tight, however, and his effort lands straight into the gloves of Neuer.

Baku floats a fantastic cross in from the right for Banzuzi to run onto. The midfielder gets there ahead of Tah, glancing a header towards the far post, but his effort bounces millimetres wide of the left post. That was Leipzig's best chance of the afternoon so far!

The Colombian takes some time to get to his feet after being on the receiving end of a robust challenge from Baku at the halfway line. After taking a minute, he's back to his feet and Bayern resume play with a free-kick.

First, Banzuzi drives forward before being crowded out by five Bayern defenders. Leipzig recover the ball quickly, though, and Baku sends Gomis through into space. Under pressure from Kim, the new Leipzig signing fires his shot well wide to the right of the goal.

Twinkle toes

Again, 19-year-old Binder dances past two defenders down the right flank before cutting back to Díaz, who fires a powerful, half-volleyed attempt from the edge of the box. There are a sea of defenders in front of him, however, and his effort is blocked.

Boey sees a low cross from the right blocked by Orbán inside the Leipzig penalty area. The Bayern players appeal to the referee for a penalty, claiming the ball had struck the Hungarian centre-back on his hand, but the referee correctly dismisses the protest.

Brown plays Binder free at the edge of the box. The young talent shows some superb quick feet before finding his own teammate Ibrahimović blocking his path, which prevents him from getting a shot away from a good position.

Fantastic intervention

Ibrahimović slips a superb through ball to Luis Díaz, who already thinks he’s clean through on Vandevoordt. But Seiwald gets there at the very last moment and pokes the ball away decisively.

It's a gift for the Colombia star and Bayern lead 1-0. Binder does excellently cutting in off the right flank before looking for Díaz with a low pass across the edge of the box. It doesn't reach the No.14, with Baku intercepting, but the Leipzig man's attempted clearance is launched straight into the back of one of his teammates, before bouncing perfectly for an unmarked Díaz in the box, who simply strokes it home past Vandevoordt to establish the lead here.

When last these sides encountered one another, it was in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup last term. That day, the Bavarians edged Die Roten Bullen courtesy of two second-half strikes in quick succession from Harry Kane and Luis Díaz, which sent Vincent Kompany's side on their way to winning a record 21st DFB Cup.

“I lived there for years, as a player and coach. It’s special to return to the Allianz Arena," explained the former Bayern defender. “We had a good relationship. You could tell he was a leader. Bayern's final three 2026 FIFA World Cup participants returned for their condensed pre-season, starting off with some performance tests following an extended break after this summer's tournament. Saibari to meet the press

Bayern summer signing Ismael Saibari is due to be officially introduced to the media at 12pm CEST on Friday. The 25-year-old Morocco international joined the Bundesliga champions on a five-year contract from PSV Eindhoven last month.

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has spoken about his silverware ambitions for 2026/27 in an interview with Sky Germany. The 40-year-old, who won the double with the Bavarians last term, said: "Perhaps all good things will come in threes this time. We've always had the chance to reach the [UEFA Champions League] final. We've always been close."

Passion and aggression key for Demichelis

Martín Demichelis' unblemished record as Leipzig's new head coach was ended by Leeds United, but perhaps it is no surprise that his players' legs were a little heavy after their week-long training camp in Saalfelden, Austria. "Intensity is an important part of the Leipzig identity," Demichelis said recently. "For me, that includes passion, a courageous and attacking style of play, but also aggression."

Bayern hitting form

The Bundesliga champions are on a run of three straight wins after losing their opening friendly to Wehen Wiesbaden. A deserved victory over UEFA Europa League holders Aston Villa - who finished fourth in the Premier League last term - suggests they are gradually finding their rhythm ahead of their clash with Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. Leipzig, though, will provide another stern test.
