Man of the Match: Julian Brandt

An unfortunate result in the end for Dortmund, but it wasn't for Julian Brandt's want of trying. The BVB midfielder was a hive of activity following his second-half introduction and scored what, on any other day, would probably have been the icing on the cake.

Full-time: St. Pauli 3-3 Borussia Dortmund

An end-to-end game comes to a close. The first half, in the end, was the quieter of the two, as Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring before missing a penalty. After the break, there were four goals and a red card. First, Andréas Hountondji headed home before strikes from Waldemar Anton and Julian Brandt appeared to have given BVB the points. However, Filippo Mané's red card for a foul on Abdoulie Ceesay in the area gave Pauli hope, and Danel Sinani scored from the subsequent penalty. Then, Eric Smith's stunner earner Pauli and unlikely point.

What a goal!

It's another centre-back who finds the back of the net, and it is great hit from Smith, who drills into the far corner. Now, can they find a winner with the goal advantage?

The centre-back does very well to prevent Guirassy from pulling back for Brandt.

This is a fantastic goal that should clinch the three points. Groß's long ball is wonderful, but so is the touch and finish from substitute Brandt.

Half-time: St. Pauli 0-1 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund are in front after an exciting first half. Both teams had chances, with Gregor Kobel and Nikola Vasilj making important stops, but Serhou Guirassy's header was the only strike of the half. The striker had a chance to double both his and his side's tally from the spot, yet Vasilj guessed the right to save.

Dortmund's experience

BVB's starting lineup clearly has the edge over St. Pauli's in terms of accumulated Bundesliga games. The visitors have 1,070 German top-flight matches between them, compared to Pauli's 147. BVB's Bundesliga starting XI goals count is also significantly higher at 154 to 3.
camera-photo

Pauli new boys

The hosts have five new signings in their starting lineup: Andréas Hountondji, Louis Oppie, Arkadiusz Pyrka, Mathias Pereira Lage, and Joel Chima Fujita are all in from the start.
camera-photo

More on those teams

The visitors have Jobe Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi starting here, with Felix Nmecha and Maximilian Beier dropping to the bench for BVB's Bundesliga opener. Pauli coach, Alexander Blessin, makes one change to the side that started the DFB Cup penalty shootout win against Norderstedt, as Adam Dzwigala replaces David Nemeth.

Nemeth sidelined for Pauli

The defender picked up an adductor injury in training and will therefore be unavailable for the side's season opener, coach Blessin confirmed: "David felt something in his adductor area and sustained it. He is unavailable."
camera-photo

Three's the magic number

BVB frontman Guirassy has played St. Pauli on three occasions in his career, and scored every time! Two of those goals came for Dortmund last season, with the other coming back in his Bundesliga 2 days with Cologne.
camera-photo

Kovač outlines Champions League expectation

Reflecting on last season's qualification for the competition, the Dortmund boss underlined his a goal of achieving it again this season, but much sooner: "I expect we'll do it again this year, but much faster. I'm not a fan of talking. It takes more than words; it requires action. And that's where we all have a responsibility."
camera-photo

Kovač on St. Pauli

“Unlike [DFB Cup opponents] Essen, St. Pauli play with a back three. They have a very fast, direct approach. We'll have to adapt to that, but I'm sure we'll be ready. Pauli performed well at home last season, so it won't be an easy game. We have to be ready physically.”
camera-photo

Blessin on facing Dortmund

“What Niko Kovač achieved last season was really good, particularly their performances towards the end of the campaign. They didn’t do badly at the Club World Cup either. We need to be clear in our approach for 90 minutes and not give them any space. They have so much quality. We’re going to have to hold our own as a unit.”

Long time coming

"It feels like I signed a long time ago," recent BVB signing Jobe Bellingham said. After his participation at the FIFA Club World Cup and in Dortmund's DFB Cup win against Essen, it certainly feels like the midfielder has been in Black and Yellow a while. And yet ... the ex-Sunderland man will only make his Bundesliga bow this weekend!
camera-photo

Couto in contention

Dortmund right-back Yan Couto was stretchered off in that cup victory with what looked to be serious injury. However, after being assessed it was concluded that the Brazilian hadn't sustained any ligament damage but rather a deep knee contusion, meaning he could still play against St. Pauli.
camera-photo

Winning starts for both in the cup

Pauli and Dortmund got a first competitive win of the 2025/26 season under their belts in the first round of the DFB Cup. Pauli beat Regionalliga Nord side Eintracht Norderstedt 3-2 on penalties, while Dortmund also recorded a narrow victory over third division side Rot-Weiss Essen, with Serhou Guirassy getting the only goal of the game.

Can Dortmund extend their opening day record?

Dortmund have won all of their opening games of the season for the last 10 years - a Bundesliga record! One of those came away from home while the other nine took place at Signal Iduna Park. Last season, the Black-Yellows kicked off with a 2-0 victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
