An unfortunate result in the end for Dortmund, but it wasn't for Julian Brandt's want of trying. The BVB midfielder was a hive of activity following his second-half introduction and scored what, on any other day, would probably have been the icing on the cake.

The defender picked up an adductor injury in training and will therefore be unavailable for the side's season opener, coach Blessin confirmed: "David felt something in his adductor area and sustained it. He is unavailable."

Three's the magic number

BVB frontman Guirassy has played St. Pauli on three occasions in his career, and scored every time! Two of those goals came for Dortmund last season, with the other coming back in his Bundesliga 2 days with Cologne.

Kovač outlines Champions League expectation

Reflecting on last season's qualification for the competition, the Dortmund boss underlined his a goal of achieving it again this season, but much sooner: "I expect we'll do it again this year, but much faster. I'm not a fan of talking. It takes more than words; it requires action. And that's where we all have a responsibility."

“What Niko Kovač achieved last season was really good, particularly their performances towards the end of the campaign. They didn’t do badly at the Club World Cup either. Long time coming

"It feels like I signed a long time ago," recent BVB signing Jobe Bellingham said. After his participation at the FIFA Club World Cup and in Dortmund's DFB Cup win against Essen, it certainly feels like the midfielder has been in Black and Yellow a while. And yet ... the ex-Sunderland man will only make his Bundesliga bow this weekend!

Couto in contention

Dortmund right-back Yan Couto was stretchered off in that cup victory with what looked to be serious injury. However, after being assessed it was concluded that the Brazilian hadn't sustained any ligament damage but rather a deep knee contusion, meaning he could still play against St. Pauli.

Winning starts for both in the cup

Pauli and Dortmund got a first competitive win of the 2025/26 season under their belts in the first round of the DFB Cup. Pauli beat Regionalliga Nord side Eintracht Norderstedt 3-2 on penalties, while Dortmund also recorded a narrow victory over third division side Rot-Weiss Essen, with Serhou Guirassy getting the only goal of the game.

Can Dortmund extend their opening day record?

Dortmund have won all of their opening games of the season for the last 10 years - a Bundesliga record! One of those came away from home while the other nine took place at Signal Iduna Park. Last season, the Black-Yellows kicked off with a 2-0 victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
