Full time: Darmstadt 0-1 Cologne

Three vital points for Cologne, who collect just their second win of the season to climb up to 15th for now. It was a hard-fought battle for the most part, except for a flurry of chances at both ends early in the second half. Davie Selke's close-range finish on the hour was ultimately the difference between the sides.

As it stands

If this result holds, the Billy Goats will move off the foot of the table, with Union Berlin dropping to the bottom. They would be level on nine points with Darmstadt, but above them on goal difference.

Attacking changes

Two more subs for Darmstadt, who are throwing everything forward in these closing minutes in search of an equaliser.

Brilliant from Thielmann

With Maglica threatening to dribble into the box and get to the byline, Thielmann is determined not to be beaten and executes a perfect sliding tackle to put the ball out for a corner.

Important Selke

The Cologne strike now has four Bundesliga goals this term, and has given his side the lead with each of them. Six of the Billy Goats' 10 league goals this term have resulted from set pieces.
67'

Goal disallowed

Selke releases Maina down the right and his low cross into the box is met by Waldschmidt, who side-foots in from close range. Following a VAR review, however, it's ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Ljubicic!

After those chances for Darmstadt, Cologne get in on the act as Ljubicic drives into the box on the left. He tries to curl a right-footed shot inside the far post, but Schuhen reads his intentions and makes a good save.

Skarke wide!

Darmstadt get forward on the counter and have three attackers against two defenders. Skarke opts to shoot from the edge of the box but his effort goes just wide.

Great chance!

Maglica with a brilliant cross into the box. It's an inviting one for Seydel, but he can't quite get there!

Visitors in charge

Cologne are seeing far more of the ball against their deep-lying hosts, but they can't move it around quick enough to open up any spaces in their defence.

Finkgräfe with a delightful curling cross into the box: good pace and height, but Selke is the only team-mate in the area and he can't get anywhere near it.

Dangerous scoreline for Cologne

Here we go again!

The second half is under way. Darmstadt are unchanged but Cologne have made two changes at the break in a bid to force the issue here.

Nothing in it

There's been plenty of grit and battling out on the pitch, but few real goalscoring chances to speak of. That should change in the second half; with both of these teams struggling near the foot of the table, they will be keen to take points off a direct rival.
43'

Better from Darmstadt

Two openings in quick succession for the hosts, first for Honsak, whose left-footed curler from the edge of the box is blocked. The ball is then worked to Holland, whose long-range attempt sails wide of the target.

Focal point

Any time Cologne get forward, it invariably involves Florian Kainz in some way.

Keeping it tight

Cologne have only allowed Darmstadt one shot on goal so far, and that was way back in the 11th minute.

Neither side is holding anything back in this one as they look to pull clear of the drop zone.

Cologne team news

After switching to a back three last week against Bayern Munich, Steffen Baumgart looks to have reverted to a four with just one change as Dominique Heintz comes in for Rasmus Carstensen, who isn’t involved after hurting his arm in training.

Darmstadt team news

Torsten Lieberknecht makes two injury-enforced changes to the team that started last week’s 1-1 draw at Freiburg. Christoph Zimmermann is replaced in the back three by Christoph Klarer, while Matthias Bader has a hip issue, so there’s a reshuffle in midfield. Klaus Gjasula comes in, meaning Fabian Nürnberger moves over to the right and Fabian Holland shifts out left.

Baumgart's view on Darmstadt

"Darmstadt will be a very tough game where it comes down to little things. They've been far more solid in the last three games in terms of defensive work. I don't think there will be many chances for either side, so it'll be about taking them. There's a relegation battle between six or seven teams. It'll remain tight down there. In the end, it's about who has the points needed after 34 games to stay up. It'll remain a very tight race for a long time."
camera-photo

Lieberknecht's view on Cologne

"Cologne see the games against us and then Mainz as the matches where they need to start their turnaround. We'll see an intense game tomorrow, which the fans can look forward to. Things will be heated out there. Cologne see us as equals. We see Cologne as a Bundesliga club that's made its mark on the Bundesliga in recent years. I'm expecting Cologne to look to get forward and press high."

Goal talk

Promoted Darmstadt have the worst defence in this season's Bundesliga (33 goals conceded), while Cologne have the tamest attack (nine goals scored).
