On their Bundesliga return, the Royal Blues have been on top. Dominating possession, they too should be leading. Sylla saw his early effort cleared on the line by Matsima, before Schallenberg and Ljubicic forced Dahmen into two excellent saves.

Ljubicic denied!

Aouchiche plays a wonderfully weighted ball into the path of Ljubicic, who draws an excellent save from Dahmen.

Goal? No, it's offside!

Augsburg have the ball in the back of the net, but it's ruled out for offside after Fellhauer, who placed the ball beautifully into the bottom corner, strayed offside.
7'

Another chance

The resulting corner finds a way to El-Faouzi, who clips the ball towards the far post onto the head of Schallenberg. Making an excellent connection, the Schalke midfielder forces Dahmen into an excellent save down low.

Huge block!

Almost a goal at the other end! Ljubicic plays an excellent ball into the path of Sylla, who holds off Matsima and then rounds Dahmen, but his effort is cleared on the line by the Augsburg defender.
2'

How did that not go in?

Wow, what a start for Augsburg. The ball is pinged into Gregoritsch, who plays a perfectly weighted first-time pass into the path of Kade, who fires the ball across goal but Fellhauer gets his feet in a muddle and can't convert from close range. Huge opportunity for the first goal here.

Watch: Calm before the storm

Miron Muslić on facing Augsburg

“They’ve been an established Bundesliga club since 2011. That’s 15 years of continuity and stability at the club, and they clearly do a lot of things right. Augsburg’s improvement has a lot to do with Manuel Baum and the work he’s done with the team. They finished ninth last season and had the eighth-best home record in the league. But I believe we can get something there.”

Manuel Baum on facing Schalke

“We expect Schalke to still be riding the high of promotion. They’re a team full of energy who will fight for everything - it’s going to be a really good battle. We need the stadium, we need our fans, and we need the noise.”

Watch: Džeko finally back in the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga return of giants Schalke goes hand-in-hand with the return of veteran star Edin Džeko. The now 40-year-old striker joined the Royal Blues at the start of the year and contributed some vital goals to their promotion drive. After playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the summer World Cup, Džeko is now diving straight into the next big challenge with Schalke. A club whose aura can evidently attract players of global renown, even when operating in Bundesliga 2 – which they, and Džeko, have no intention of going back to.

Last time out - Schalke

Schalke also booked their place in the second round of the cup, but it certainly wasn't easy going against fourth-tier Hallescher FC as they needed extra time to progress, having fallen behind in the first half. Goals from Dejan Ljubičić and Edin Džeko then had the Royal Blues on the verge of victory in normal time, only for Niclas Stierlin to equalise in stoppage time. However, three goals in extra time from Moussa Sylla, Junior Adamu and a second from Džeko eventually saw Schalke go through unscathed.

A proud record

This is Augsburg's 16th consecutive campaign in Germany's top flight. Die Függerstädter are one of six sides - along with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim and Union Berlin - who have never been relegated from the Bundesliga.

Last time out - Augsburg

Two second-half goals from Anton Kade and Kristijan Jakić secured a 2-0 victory against Bundesliga 2 outfit Energie Cottbus as Manuel Baum's side booked their spot in the DFB Cup second round.
