Full-time: Union 0-0 HSV

A fascinating tussle ends scoreless, with Daniel Heuer Fernandes Hamburg's hero for saving a penalty from Andrej Ilić early in the first half. The hosts also hit a post in an evenly-contested game that HSV impressed in. The Red Shorts were reduced to 10 men before the end when Fábio Vieira was dismissed for dangerous play.

Vieira off

Fábio Vieira goes in with a high boot and catches Querfeld, who collapses in a heap. The referee whips out the red card and the HSV man is off ... and seriously hurt too.

Trimmel tugs back Dompé who was flying towards the area and that will be a booking for Union's captain.

Chances at both ends

Guilherme Ramos gets onto Daniel Elfadli's headed pass and directs his own header towards the corner, but such was the lack of power on that finish that Rønnow can get there and make the save. At the other end, Tom Rothe smashes over the crossbar.
81'

Another home chance

It's one more Trimmel delivery - this time a free kick - and Ansah rises to angle a header wide.
camera-photo

Union hit the post!

Trimmel's corner goes towards the near post and is left by substitute Lokonga, who is highly relieved to see the ball bounce back off the upright as opposed to going straight in. Schäfer smashes over on the follow up.

Huge Hamburg chance

Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer is in space inside the Union box on the right and looks up to pick his spot. The forward thrashes a shot narrowly wide of the far post. Big miss.

Philippe booked

The Hamburg man hacks down Trimmel and immediately goes into the referee's notebook.

Time ticking down

We're coming up to the final 20 minutes of this game and although Hamburg are still bossing the possession stats, it's difficult to predict who might win this game from here.

No Union joy

Trimmel's set-piece from downtown ends up harmlessly in the hands of Heuer Fernandes.

Hamburg go close

Fábio Vieira watches the dropping ball from the edge of the area. The Arsenal loanee shapes to shoot and volleys narrowly wide of the target.

Back underway

The referee signals for play to restart after a short pause at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

Union changes

Oliver Burke takes his place on the bench and cuts a frustrated figure. The forward was never really in this game having netted a hat-trick last weekend. Tim Skarke and András Schäfer are both on for the hosts.

Break in play

The referee has halted the game briefly here but we'll resume shortly with a couple of changes.

Dompé dipper

A super, long-rage shot from Dompé rises and then drops dangerously towards the target. Rønnow throws up a fist to pop that effort over the crossbar.

Union alive

Khedira fires a snapshot into the ground from the edge of the area which pops up into the arms of Heuer Fernandes.
48'

HSV hungry

Hamburg start the second half much as they did the first, looking to find a way through Union's compact line-up. HSV's last away win in the Bundesliga was seven years ago and they look like they want to bridge that gap this evening.

Off we go again

Half-time: Union 0-0 HSV

Daniel Heuer Fernandes saved a penalty from Andrej Ilić early in the half, but aside from that, the hosts have not been much in a contest in which Hamburg have enjoyed the majority of chances and possession.

Ansah spurns one

Ilyas Ansah receives the ball inside the area and a touch to the right. He flashes a shot over the top when the target needed to be hit. A poor miss from the in-form forward and he knows it.
39'

Mulheim danger

Union very nearly did break there, with Burke pouncing and about to burst away, before being chopped down by Muheim. It's a yellow card for the Hamburg man and he must have been worried that it could have been worse.
camera-photo

HSV the happier?

Union missed an earlier penalty to take the lead here but thus far, it does appear as if Union are the away side, waiting to break, while HSV are making most of the running.
32'

Counter chance wasted

Philippe breaks down the right and suddenly Union look in trouble. The French attacker spreads the play for his compatriot Jean-Luc Dompé. The HSV No.7 cuts back inside hoping for a shooting opportunity but that allows Union to race in and clear.

HSV fail to clear their lines and Diogo Leite takes the ball back into the penalty area. Philippe clumsily chops down the Portuguese centre back and that's a clear-cut penalty.

Union yet to get going

On the back of a 4-3 win at Frankfurt last weekend, home fans may have expected a more full-throttled opening from their team here. As it stands, Hamburg are making most of the running.

Both sides are lining up inside the players' tunnel at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei while the home fans belt out the Union anthem. Cracking atmosphere here in the German capital.

Bundesliga first!

Incredibly, this will be the first-ever meeting between these teams in the Bundesliga.

Different experience

Union's starting XI boast a combined total of 1,128 Bundesliga appearances, while Hamburg's line-up here are showing a combined 77 appearances in the top-flight.

Ansah fired up

Union's 6'4", 20-year-old striker Ilyas Ansah is hanging around the Bundesliga's top goalscorer charts with four goals to his name in four Bundesliga appearances. Signed from Paderborn in the summer, Ansah burst onto the scene in the Bundesliga, scoring twice on his debut in the division in Union's Matchday 1 win against VfB Stuttgart.

More on those teams

Both sides won last week: HSV beat Heidenheim 2-1 and Union overcame Frankfurt 4-3. As such, both teams have named unchanged starting line-ups.

Rønnow extends

Ahead of the game, Union have announced that goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow has penned a new deal with the club, although did not confirm the details. The Dane has made 130 appearances since joining in 2021 and has been voted Player of the Year by Union fans for the last three seasons. "Frederik is an outstanding goalkeeper who is a key figure for our team with his quality, experience and character," said managing director Horst Heldt.

Sebastian Bönig on facing Hamburg

The Union assistant coach, who is standing in for the suspended Steffen Baumgart for the encounter, said: "We're definitely not going into this game as favourites. We know Hamburg's strengths; they can hurt us time and again with their speed. We've been vulnerable defensively lately – and very, very strong in attack."

Union win again

Oliver Burke's hat-trick - a first by a Scottish player in the Bundesliga - helped Union Berlin to an impressive 4-3 win in Frankfurt last time out. It was their first three-point haul since a 2-1 home triumph over VfB Stuttgart on the opening weekend, after defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim.

It was a case of fourth time's a charm for promoted Hamburg as they edged bottom side Heidenheim 2-1 on Matchday 4. The Red Shorts' first Bundesliga win since the final day of their fateful 2017/18 campaign, the result followed a goalless draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach and defeats to local rivals St. Pauli and defending champions Bayern Munich.
