World Cup agony for Eriksen

In stark contrast to Leverkusen's Schick, Wolfsburg midfielder Christian Eriksen just missed out on qualification for this summer's FIFA World Cup. The 34-year-old came on in the second-half of Denmark's play-off final against Czechia on Tuesday, who went on to win via a penalty shootout.

It was an eventful international break for several Leverkusen stars, and most notably of all, Patrick Schick. The forward helped Czechia qualify for their first FIFA World Cup finals since 2006 after scoring against the Republic of Ireland in their play-off semi-final last week.

Bayer have history on their side

Of the 57 matches played between the two sides, Wolfsburg has won 21, while Leverkusen have recorded 28 victories. Eleven matches ended in a draw. The last two encounters had different outcomes, as Leverkusen won one, and Wolfsburg won the other.

Leverkusen playing catch-up

A run of only two wins from their past six league games has seen Leverkusen lose ground in the race for the top four, but Kasper Hjulmand's side remain just four points outside the UEFA Champions League places with seven rounds of fixtures remaining.

Can Wolfsburg turn the tide?

The Wolves remain deep in relegation trouble following their narrow defeat to Bremen, which stretched their winless Bundesliga run into double figures. They have not tasted victory in the top flight since a 2-1 triumph over St. Pauli on 14 January.
