Bayern Munich claim Franz Beckenbauer Supercup as Michael Olise shines in Dortmund

Michael Olise scored one and set up another as Bayern Munich proved too strong for Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on Saturday.

Bayern arrived at Signal Iduna Park as defending Supercup holders and in fine pre-season form, having beaten RB Leipzig 3-1 in their final warm-up fixture. Dortmund, meanwhile, had shown resilience in their own preparations, coming from two goals down to draw with Roma.

New signings featured prominently in both starting line-ups, with Nathaniel Brown making his first competitive start for Bayern and Konstantinos Karetsas and Joane Gadou getting the nod for Niko Kovač's side.

Bayern dominate from the off

Bayern set the tempo from the first whistle, controlling possession and pressing Dortmund back into their own half. Olise was a constant menace on the right flank, winning four corners in the first half alone and drawing repeated fouls.

Aleksandar Pavlović tested Gregor Kobel with a shot from the edge of the box in the 14th minute, while Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich both had efforts blocked shortly after.

Dortmund struggled to create anything of note going forward, with Serhou Guirassy and Konstantinos Karetsas unable to find a way through a well-organised Bayern defence. Bayern had 64 per cent possession in the first half and registered eight shots before the break, while Dortmund had none.

Brown breaks the deadlock

The opener arrived in the 28th minute. Olise received the ball inside the Dortmund area and, after being tackled, the ball fell to Brown on the edge of the box. The summer signing, deployed unusually as a number ten by Vincent Kompany, drove his shot into the near corner past Kobel to make it 1-0 — his first competitive goal for the club.

Dortmund came closest to an equaliser when Ramy Bensebaini headed home from a Julian Ryerson cross in the 42nd minute, only for the flag to be raised for offside, a decision confirmed by VAR. Luis Díaz also saw a curling effort superbly tipped round the post by Kobel in the 37th minute, while Brown himself went agonisingly close to a second when he put the ball just wide of the far post in the 44th minute.

Olise doubles the lead in stoppage time

Just as Dortmund were hoping to reach the interval at only one goal down, Olise struck again. Jobe Bellingham lost the ball in midfield, and Olise seized on it, driving forward before poking the ball past Kobel from close range in the 45th+1 minute to make it 2-0.

The half-time scoreline was a fair reflection of Bayern's dominance, with the visitors' xGoals figure of 1.73 dwarfing Dortmund's 0.15 at the break.

Dortmund improve after the break

Niko Kovač made one change at half-time, introducing Giannis Konstantelias for Samuele Inácio, and the Greek midfielder made an immediate impact, winning a free-kick and testing the Bayern defence with a volley that was blocked by Jonathan Tah.

Karetsas also forced a fine save from Manuel Neuer in the 52nd minute. However, Bayern remained dangerous on the counter, with Kane attempting an audacious long-range effort in the 49th minute. Kovač made a triple substitution on the hour mark, bringing on Maximilian Beier, Joey Veerman and Fabio Silva for Karetsas, Felix Nmecha and Guirassy respectively.

Silva gives Dortmund hope

The substitutions paid dividends in the 75th minute. After Jonathan Tah gave the ball away, Konstantelias drove forward and slipped in Daniel Svensson on the left. Svensson squared for Silva, who swept home from just outside the six-yard box to make it 1-2.

The goal, deflected in off Alphonso Davies, gave Dortmund renewed hope with 15 minutes remaining. Bayern responded quickly, with Kane going close from distance in the 77th minute, and Olise was denied by Kobel in the 87th minute. Dortmund's Beier then spurned a golden chance in the 90th+3 minute, side-footing over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Bensebaini sees red as Bayern hold on

Any hopes of a Dortmund comeback were extinguished in the 90th minute when Bensebaini was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on substitute Ismael Saibari, leaving the hosts with ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Dortmund continued to press, but Bayern managed the closing stages comfortably. Díaz was replaced by Tom Bischof in the 90th+5 minute as Bayern ran down the clock. The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 victory for the holders, who claimed the Supercup for the 12th time in their history.
