Record-breaking Bayern Munich squad depth shines against St. Pauli

Bayern Munich added another big record to their ever-growing list as they dispatched St. Pauli 5-0 on Matchday 29 to become the highest scoring Bundesliga team ever, overtaking the iconic Bayern team of 1971/72. What made the result even more impressive was that victory came courtesy of a significantly rotated team as the Bavarians continue to fight on three fronts.

When Bayern put Pauli to the sword on Saturday, scoring their 101st, 102nd, 103rd, 104th and 105th Bundesliga goals of the season, they did so without many of their star names. At the back, Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah were left on the bench, Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl missed out through injury, and both Luis Díaz and top scorer Harry Kane were also left on the bench. The latter wasn’t even required throughout the 90 minutes.

Bayern’s starting XI against Pauli included just four of the players that started in the club’s 2-1 win over Real Madrid during the week. That’s not to say that it was a Bayern team lacking quality; Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise both started and scored, for example, but it shows just how strong Kompany’s squad is.

With Bayern still competing on all fronts, having made it to the UEFA Champions League quarter-final and the DFB Cup semi-final, it is this depth that could prove integral to Bayern’s chances of picking up multiple pieces of silverware.

Although Musiala is a big name, the 23-year-old has only been a bit-part player this season as he’s been fighting back from a lengthy injury lay-off, but he looked back to his best as he starred on Saturday. Alongside him, Nicolas Jackson showed again why he is a worthy understudy to Kane with a goal, and Leon Goretzka also got on the scoresheet. Additionally, Raphaël Guerreiro proved his value and incredible versatility with a goal from attacking midfield.

Speaking after the game, Kompany was keen to praise his talented squad:

"I spoke to Mr Hoeneß yesterday about how we were closing in on this record. It’s stood for such a long time, which makes it even nicer that we’ve now claimed it. What I find good in general is that our team stands for goals. That’s just what FC Bayern and also our team are about. I think the boys should be proud of it – but of course, we carry on.”

Musiala, too, highlighted the importance of Bayern’s new record: “It’s an amazing feeling. I think we all knew that if we went in with the right mentality to give energy and win this game, it could be a great night for us. It’s a historical moment that we can all take with us, and I think everyone is really proud of this day.”

Bayern at this moment represent a scary prospect for any potential opponent because when the likes of Díaz, Olise and Kane need a break, then there is usually another top-class talent waiting in the wings ready to take their place.
