Youngsters shine as Bayern Munich defeat K League side Jeju in pre-season friendly

Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich side were victorious in the first match of their summer tour of Asia, defeating South Korean outfit Jeju SK 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

All of the goals came in the first half of the friendly match, with Bayern academy graduates Felipe Chávez and Bastian Assomo scoring either side of Chang-Min Lee's 15-minute strike for Jeju. The German side really should have added to their lead in the second period, as the likes of Aleksandar Pavlović and Luis Díaz had decent opportunities in front of goal. 

The game also marked the return of several Bayern stars, including German internationals Jonathan Tah and Joshua Kimmich, who came off the bench in the second half for their first pre-season minutes. 

Bayern's summer tour of Asia continues on Friday, when they will face UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa in Hong Kong.

Kompany's side kick off their tour of Asia with a win against South Korean outfit Jeju. All of the goals came in the first half, with Bayern academy graduates Chávez and Assomo scoring either side of Chang-Min Lee's 15-minute strike. However, the performance, in what was stifling heat, should give Bayern confidence heading into their next pre-season game against Aston Villa in Hong Kong.

A cross comes in from the right side and the Colombian seemingly has a simple tap-in. However, his shot is tame and the Jeju keeper is able to stand tall and keep the ball out. Pavlovic's effort from just outside the penalty area is well blocked moments later.

The winger bursts forward down the right channel. He drives into the Jeju box and shoots with his right foot, but the ball creeps just wide of the goalkeeper's far post. That was excellent, direct play from the Bayern youngster.

Two Bayern subs combine, as Kimmich swings a lovely cross into the middle of the Jeju box. Stanišić connects well with the ball but can't quite keep his header down, which floats over the crossbar with the help of the goalkeeper's finger-tip.

Thanks to their higher press this half, which has forced several Bayern players into mistakes, Jeju are starting to enjoy more of the ball overall.

Jeju win the ball high up the pitch, giving Choi the chance to shoot from distance. His effort takes a wicked deflection, but Urbig is able to readjust his body and make a solid block.

Jeju finally have the chance to put Bayern under some pressure after winning a corner. However, it's hit to the near post, where Bischof is able to make a fine block and clear his lines.

Familiar pattern

The second period has started in much the same way the first did - with Bayern retaining the ball for long spells. Jeju have had a couple of opportunities to run at the Bayern defenders, but they have stood firm so far this half.

The ball is rolling for the second half. Bayern are unchanged after the break, but expect a host of substitutions from Kompany at some point in the next 45 minutes.

Bayern lead at the break thanks to a pair of excellent strikes from young forwards Chávez and Assomo. Jeju did briefly equalise in the 15th minute through Lee, having tested the German champions in the opening exchanges on the counter. However, Bayern have dominated the ball and really should be dominating the scoresheet, having squandered several other chances to score.

The young forward restores Bayern's lead in some style. He receives the ball on the edge of the opposition penalty area and fires a rasping shot past a helpless Heo in the Jeju goal.

Bayern really should be 2-1 up. Chávez cuts inside from the right and forces a decent stop from the Jeju stopper, who spills the ball. However, Bischof can't convert the rebound on the slide.

Moments after that excellent tackle, the Bayern captain is replaced by attacker Binder. It's unclear whether this was a pre-planned change, or whether it's due to an injury. Bischof has taken the captain's armband from Kim.

That was nearly a calamitous own goal from Bayern. A long Jeju through-ball is narrowly headed wide of Urbig's near post by Ito - who didn't see his goalkeeper coming out to collect the ball.

The midfielder shoots from range once more, but his effort at goal is well blocked. Bayern have controlled possession for the last 10 minutes or so.

That came out of nowhere. Brazilian forward Aiás brilliantly flicks the ball up inside the Bayern box with a trick, and picks out captain Lee in the process. From a few yards out, he is able to steer the ball past Urbig and into the far corner of the net.

That didn't take long. A short corner routine eventually sees Chávez pick the ball up on the right corner of the Jeju box. He spots a game to shoot and expertly rolls the ball into the far corner of the net to hand Bayern a 1-0 lead. He's been the best player on the pitch so far.

Bischof has a bit of space ahead of him and lets fly from around 25 yards out. However, he scuffs the effort, which rolls harmlessly wide for a goal kick.

Neither side have been able to create a chance just yet. Bayern have enjoyed most of the ball, with winger Chávez looking very lively for the German champions down the right channel.

Kim Min-jae returns

The Bayern and South Korea defender starts today's friendly match in the country of his birth. Kim hasn't played a club game in Korea since making his name at Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the 2017/18 season. As such, it should be a special occasion for the 29-year-old, who will wear the captain's armband for Bayern.

Ito and Urbig start for the first time this pre-season, having returned to Bayern later than some of their teammates due to FIFA World Cup commitments. Bischof, who recently wore the captain's armband against Wehen Wiesbaden, starts for the third game in a row. Meanwhile, the likes of Tah, Díaz, Kimmich, Laimer and Pavlović are all on the bench.

Bayern Munich's pre-season: The story so far

Vincent Kompany's men have played two pre-season matches so far this summer, which ended very differently. Bayern's first friendly, against third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden, ended in a 2-1 defeat, with Tom Bischof scoring their only goal of the game from the penalty spot. However, the following week they got back to winning ways with a thumping 15-0 victory against amateur side Rottach-Egern. Today's clash against Jefu SK is the first of two in Asia for Bayern, as they also face UEFA Europa League champions Aston Villa in Hong Kong on Friday.
