Head-to-head: Harry Kane and Erling Haaland to meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals

Two superstar strikers will do battle when England face Norway in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday 11 July, as Harry Kane and Erling Haaland prepare for a striking showdown of epic proportions in Miami.

Currently two of Europe’s greatest goal machines, Kane and Haaland have set this World Cup alight with their ruthless finishing, making it a matter of when, and not if, they’ll score. Their inevitability at this summer’s tournament has simply been a continuation of their form for their respective clubs, with Kane firing Bayern Munich to a league and DFB Cup double while Haaland and Manchester City triumphed in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season.

Having racked up an unbelievable 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern in 2025/26 and picking up a third consecutive Torjägerkanone, England captain Kane has brought his red-hot form over to the States with him, netting six times in five games to set up an enticing quarter-final clash with Norway, and put him level with Gerd Müller on 14 World Cup goals.

His late brace against DR Congo led the Three Lions to a crucial comeback victory in the round of 32, before he fired in a sublime penalty to help his side see off a spirited Mexico team in the round of 16.

Kane’s knack for scoring vital goals is hardly a secret, and was particularly evident in Bayern’s final game of the season against VfB Stuttgart in the DFB Cup final, where he scored a hat-trick to fire them past Sebastian Hoeneß’ stubborn side and take him to 146 goals in 147 Bayern games, a jaw-dropping total.

Within those 147 games lie a host of scoring milestones, for example becoming the fastest player to reach 50 Bundesliga goals (43 games), a title that saw him knock Haaland (50 games) down to second place.

However, if there’s one man that compete with Kane’s extraordinary numbers, it’s his opposite number, Haaland. In his two-year stay in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, he scored 86 times in 89 competitive matches, including 62 in 67 Bundesliga games. In fact, in the Champions League his numbers actually dwarf Kane’s having netted 57 times in 58 games, while the England captains sits on 54 goals in 70 European matches.

Since leaving the Bundesliga for the Premier League in 2022, Haaland has bagged 162 times in 198 games for new employers City, and he’s now taken his taste for goals onto the world stage.

In his first ever World Cup, the Norwegian menace has netted 7 goals in five games, a tally he could yet add to against England. Having already scored half the amount Kane has with two tournaments fewer under his belt, there’s no telling the numbers Haaland could go on to reach.

His game-winning brace against Brazil epitomised just how lethal he can be. His towering header past Alisson to open the scoring late on was a display of brilliant movement, perfect timing and raw power, while his second was an example of incredible precision and confidence.

Haaland now lies on 62 goals in 54 international games and Kane has 89 in 119, but how many will each of them get when they go head-to-head?
