Mats Hummels bids farewell as Borussia Dortmund handed first defeat of pre-season by Juventus

Mats Hummels bid farewell to Borussia Dortmund in an emotional pre-season friendly defeat against Juventus at Signal Iduna Park.

Hummels was named in the starting line-up for his swansong and rolled back the years with a couple of his trademark outside-of-the-boot passes to the wings in the early stages, much to the delight of the home crowd. 

However, Juventus poured cold water on the occasion by opening the scoring through Andrea Cambiaso, taking the lead with their first attack of the game.

Hummels was substituted off after that goal and was given a standing ovation from the Dortmund faithful in recognition of his service to the club over the years.

Cambiaso struck again for the Italian side in the second half, rounding off a swift counter-attack before both sides made wholesale changes. One of which was Maximilian Beier, who grabbed a consolation goal late on for BVB.

It wasn’t enough, however, as Dortmund ultimately tasted their first defeat of pre-season. The team's first competitive fixture of 2025/26 is a DFB Cup clash with Rot-Weiss Essen on 18 August, before they travel to St. Pauli for their Bundesliga opener the following Saturday.

It's not the farewell result that Hummels would've wanted on his final appearance in a Dortmund shirt as the hosts are defeated by Juventus. The Italian side doubled their lead not long after the restart, thanks to Cambiaso's second of the afternoon. Both teams made lots of changes over the course of the second 45 and it was substitute Beier who clawed one back late on for BVB, but his late finish couldn't quite inspire a complete comeback.

The German forward is still pressing high in the latter stages of this match. His intensity was nearly rewarded as goalkeeper Pinsoglio was sold short with a back-pass, but the Italian managed to recover well.

It's mixed emotions for BVB at half time. The hosts started very brightly, with Groß and Adeyemi particularly shining in the early stages, however it was Juventus who took the lead, scoring against the run of play after 16 minutes courtesy of Cambiaso. Afterwards, Hummels said goodbye to the Westfalenstadion for the last time, replaced by Süle. Juventus grew as the half went on, putting Dortmund under more pressure, though BVB continued to impress on the ball, although without finding a response. Nevertheless, Süle's injury just before the break will be a worrying sign for coach Niko Kovač.

At a media gathering at his new employers' pre-season training camp in Austria, the 19-year-old said: "It feels like I signed ages ago. I already feel part of the team and the club, but I can't wait for the games to start in Germany."

Juventus have also had a shortened pre-season after their Club World Cup exploits, with a 2-2 draw against fellow Italian side Reggina their only summer friendly so far. Dortmund coach Niko Kovač says he has "several scenarios in mind" with regard to who will accompany Guirassy in attack this season. "We want to give everyone game time," said the BVB boss. "It's important that every single player who plays also performs. There's competition for places and everyone has to work for their spot."

Tough test for BVB

Dortmund have recorded back-to-back victories since returning from the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer, thumping Sportfreunde Siegen 8-1 before claiming a narrow 3-2 win over Lille. Their final pre-season fixture, against the side they famously beat in the 1997 UEFA Champions League final, is likely to be their toughest yet.
