Bayern Munich's 5-1 home win over a Hoffenheim side that had won five from their previous five before arriving at the Allianz Arena on Matchday 21 extended their lead at the top of the table to six points once more, and put the rest of the league on alert.

Borussia Dortmund's win over Wolfsburg on Saturday meant that a Bayern win over Hoffenheim was a necessity if they wanted to reduce the title pressure on themselves, and restore a six-point lead over their Klassiker rivals.

By Sunday evening, Vincent Kompany's men had done just that, and in some style too! Aided by the early sending off of Kevin Akpoguma, Bayern stormed to a 5-1 win thanks to a Luis Díaz hat-trick and a Harry Kane brace.

"That was a statement to the rest of the league," enthused former Bayern midfielder Michael Ballack on DAZN. "They sent a strong and confident message".

The Rekordmeister appeared to take talk of a Dortmund title charge personally, and bounced back from disappointing results in previous weeks with a clear message to anyone attempting to take their Bundesliga crown.

Coach Kompany was also delighted by their Matchday 21 victory, but was wary of getting carried away: "It would have been perfect if we had won 5-0 or 6-0. The result is good, we are where we need to be."

Bayern will now turn their attention to their DFB Cup quarter-final against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, who also bounced back from two disappointing weeks to win against Cologne on Matchday 21.

However, with his ruthless Bayern attack back in full flow, Kompany is brimming with confidence ahead of their cup clash. "The lads just don't stop," he beamed. "They remain dangerous and are always hungry in attack."

Kompany isn't the only one excited about what's ahead either, with the imperious Kane equally positive after taking his Bundesliga goal tally to 24 goals in 21 games in their win against Christian Ilzer's side.

"We have a decent lead," said the England captain. "We're still in the DFB Cup and we were in the top eight in the Champions League. But now the season really begins. Now we have to be there and perform."
