Bayern Munich out of FIFA Club World Cup after nailbiting PSG battle
Vincent Kompany's side were beaten by the reigning European champions in a quarter-final marred by a serious injury to Jamal Musiala, despite a determined performance and plenty of chances.
With Jamal Musiala making his first start for Bayern since April after recovering from injury, Vincent Kompany's side set out to make a statement against a PSG side who had lifted the UEFA Champions League at the end of May.
That was easier said than done against a confident Parisian outfit, who fired the first shot of the game wide via Désiré Doué in the opening minutes - although Michael Olise became the first player to test a goalkeeper when drilling into Gianluigi Donnarumma's hands.
Bayern's determined display and intense pressing gave them the upper hand for much of the opening stages, and Olise forced a strong stop from Donnarumma with a potent strike destined for the top corner just before the half-hour mark. PSG still managed to show their attacking threat though, with Manuel Neuer needing to race out to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after he had burst into the box.
Bayern pushed for the lead before the break with Harry Kane heading over, and Musiala almost meeting a Aleksandar Pavlović cross in front of Donnarumma. A Dayot Upamecano header was then disallowed for offside before the first period ended on a sour note as Musiala crashed into Donnarumma and was stretchered off with a serious injury.

Chances fell at either end in an open start to the second period, with Neuer denying Bradley Barcola well before Serge Gnabry was thwarted by Donnarumma minutes after replacing Musiala at the interval. Olise then flashed another good opening over before former Borussia Dortmund striker Ousmane Dembélé almost embarrassed Neuer but slotted just wide when the Bayern keeper lost the ball outside his area.
Goals seemed inevitable as the game entered the final stages, and unfortunately one fell in Neuer's net as Doué flashed a shot into the bottom corner. Thomas Müller was unable to claw Bayern back into it as a late substitute in what turned out to be his final match for the club, despite two PSG players seeing late red cards. Kane had a late Kane header ruled out for offside before Dembélé sealed the win for the French side by smashing in a second in stoppage time.
Match stats
Bayern had won six of their last seven matches against PSG, including each of the previous four. They also kept clean sheets in that quartet of games.
With 16 goals to their name, Bayern are still the highest scorers at the Club World Cup.
Kane, Musiala and Olise each have three goals so far at the tournament, one behind top scorer Ángel Di María, who has also been eliminated with Benfica.
Lucas Hernández made 74 Bundesliga appearances for Bayern between 2019 and 2023.
Hakimi scored 12 goals in 78 competitives appearance for Dortmund between 2018 and 2020; Dembélé scored 10 in 49 outings for BVB in 2016/17.
FIFA Club World Cup Quarter-finals Quarter-finals Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
Full time: PSG 2-0 Bayern
Bayern's Club World Cup campaign ends in Atlanta, despite a superb performance in which they dominated the European champions for the majority of the game. They couldn't, however, find a finishing touch to a number of the chances created, so it's PSG who advance to the semi-finals in New Jersey on 9 July.
The referee overturns his original decision after reviewing the footage, telling the crowd that Mendes touched the ball first.

Knockout blow
Hakimi somehow wriggles through two or three Bayern defenders on the right before cutting the ball back for Dembélé to rifle in his side's second goal.
Bayern lose possession in midfield and PSG canter forward. Neves breaks into the box and lays it back to Doué, on the right hand side. He shifts the ball onto his left foot, aims to shoot for the far post but wrong-foots Neuer and sends a low drive in at the near post.
The midfielder does well to create space for himself on the edge of the box but his left-footed strike deflects off Pacho and goes over the target.

Lucky Neuer!
The goalkeeper misplaces a pass out from the back straight to Kvaratskhelia. Neuer slide tackles in to win possession back but it goes straight to Dembélé, who shoots first time towards the empty net from about 25 yards out. His effort rolls just wide of the post, much to Neuer's relief.

Yellow with consequences
As that's Laimer's second booking at this tournament, he'll miss the semi-final through suspension, if Bayern go through.
Bayern haven't eased off at all and continue to hound PSG inside their own half.
65'
Olise again!
Gnabry sends Olise into space in the right-hand side of the PSG box but, under pressure from Pacho, he smacks a right-footed effort over the bar.
64'
Huge let-off for Neuer!
Neuer misplaces a pass out from the back that Kvaratskhelia intercepts. The goalkeeper slide tackles him to win possession back but it falls straight to Dembélé, who shoots from outside of the box towards the empty net. He effort rolls just wide of the post - Neuer is a very lucky man.

Olise has a go!
The France international jinks inside from the right and has a sight of goal but his left-footed strike is comfortably saved by Donnarumma.

Header from Coman
Brilliant from Kane on the right to find a cross towards the back post but Coman's header is blocked for a corner.
56'
Driving run
A surging run into the box from Laimer before slipping a pass into Gnabry. He's not quite up to game speed yet though, and his attempted cross into the middle is cut out.
53'
Chance for Coman!
This time it's Coman's turn to race away from the defence but his left-footed shot is straight at Donnarumma.
50'
Huge save from Neuer!
Barcola is sent through one-on-one with Neuer, slightly left of centre. He tries to curl a shot inside the far corner but Neuer reads his intentions and produces a stunning save.
49'
Oh dear...
PSG win a free-kick in a dangerous position, 30 yards from goal in a central area. Hakimi tries a training-ground routine, gently tapping the ball forward but none of his team-mates are on the same wavelength and Bayern can clear.
47'
Gnabry on
Musiala had to be carried off the pitch at the end of the first half; he's now replaced by Gnabry.
Vincent Kompany's men have been superb, their press forcing PSG to play largely in their own half. There have been chances at both ends though, with this game still very much in the balance. That injury to Musiala at the end will force Bayern to reshuffle things in attack, with Gnabry the most likely replacement.
Musiala chases a ball into the box and collides with Donnarumma. The Germany attacker stays down and given the urgency of Kane's response, with the Bayern medical staff sprinting onto the pitch, it looks to be a serious ankle injury.
Olise delivers a wicked free-kick from the left into the box. It finds Upamecano, who powers a bullet header into the net but it won't count as he was offside.

Added time
We're into the first of three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the first half.
41'
So close!
Pavlović floats a brilliantly disguised pass into the box, trying to pick out Musiala's run. He can't quite get there and for a moment it looks like the ball might bounce into the net, but Donnarumma is alive to the danger and paws it clear.
39'
Kane's first chance!
Coman does brilliantly on the left, twisting and turning past two defenders to dig out a cross for Kane to attack. He gets the better of Pacho on the edge of the six-yard box but can't keep his header from whizzing over the bar.
37'
Still pressing
Bayern are sticking to their tactics of reducing PSG's time and space on the ball, pressing high inside the French side's half.
35'
First change
Stanišić is unable to continue with the apparent hamstring injury sustained earlier. Boey comes on in his place and goes straight in at right-back, with Laimer switching over to left-back.
The winger receives the ball on the right-hand side of the PSG box, skips past Mendes and smacks a right-footed shot at goal. It's arrowing towards the top corner but Donnarumma dices to his right to make a good save.
25'
Danger!
A change of pace from Kvaratskhelia as he shuffles past Upamecano on the left. His cross into the middle is a good one, but he can't find a team-mate.
22'
Over from Ruíz!
PSG attack down the left and Bayern can't deal with a low ball into the box. It falls at the feat of Fabián Ruíz on his favoured left foot, but he can't keep it down.
21'
Stanišić down
The Bayern defender lies down, pointing to his hamstring. He receives treatment and Boey starts warming up just in case, but Stanišić seems to be ok to continue.
19'
Side-netting!
PSG get forward quickly on the break as Barcola plays Hakimi into space down the right. He sends a low, teasing ball across the face of Bayern's goal and it arrives with Kvaratskhelia at the back post. He tries to squeeze a shot past Neuer at the near post but can only hit the side netting.
18'
Blocked in
PSG are really struggling to get out of their own half at present, such is the intensity and organsiation of Bayern's press. How long can Kompany's men keep it up for though?
16'
Nice idea
Kane with a fantastic cushioned header under pressure inside the box, bringing down a long ball into the box and trying to lay it off for Pavlović all in the same movement. Pavlović isn't quite on the same wavelength though, and Pacho clears.
14'
First corner
Coman's in-swinging delivery from the left is cleared by Pacho, giving Bayern a corner, which comes to nothing.
Just as they did against Flamengo in the round of 16, Bayern have begun with a fierce intensity here, going on the front foot and pressing PSG deep inside their own half. They're getting chances, too...
8'
Burst from Laimer!
Olise sends Laimer darting into space down the right. The Austrian sprints into the box and attempts to cross into the middle, where he has three team-mates waiting. He shanks the ball off the side of his foot though, and it goes out for a goal kick.
6'
Olise making amends
Bayern have their first sight of goal as Kane presses well. The ball comes to Pavlović, whose route to goal is blocked, so he back-heels it to Olise. The Frenchman's first-time side-footer lacks the pace to beat Donnarumma, however.
3'
Early chance!
Olise gives the ball away cheaply deep inside his own half. The ball comes to Doué, who strides forward and shoots from the edge of the area, but it flies just wide of Neuer's right-hand post.
1'
Peeeeeep!
PSG get the match going and immediately punt the ball forward and out of play for a Bayern throw-in.
Kick-off!
Moment of silence
The players are wearing black armbands and there's a moment of silence in honour of Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically passed away earlier this week.
Vincent Kompany makes two changes from the side that began against Flamengo in the previous round. Pavlović starts instead of Goretzka alongside Kimmich in central midfield, and fit-again Musiala is also recalled, with Gnabry dropping to the bench. Coman is fit to play from the off after being taken off with a knock against Flamengo.
Jamal Musiala has yet to feature in a full game at the Club World Cup due to injury niggles but Atlanta might provide the stage for the talented 22-year-old to add to his hat-trick against Auckland City in the group stages. "He has trained over the last few days and is taking the right steps," Vincent Kompany said of the Germany international. "We’ll see what his role [against PSG] will be."
More from Kompany
Bayern's Bundesliga-winning coach was pressed on exactly what he expects Paris's game plan will be going into this evening's encounter. "PSG will apply pressure and be very aggressive in their counter-pressing," the 39-year-old said. "They will say the same about us. It will be about individual and collective performances – and the ball has to go in. It’ll be a good match,” the Belgian predicted.
That's the question that was put to PSG boss Luis Enriqué about the former Borussia Dortmund player, who has featured for just 28 minutes at the Club World Cup having come into the tournament with a thigh complaint. "Ousmane has trained with the squad all this week [and] those sessions have given me information," the Spaniard explained. "I'm very happy to see him back with the team, but it's not the moment to give our opponents information. We'll see."
“I expect PSG in their best form, they’re a complete team. It’s a fantastic challenge for us, I always like to play against the best opponents. I haven’t seen a lot of teams that play as intensely over 90 minutes as Paris. We’re fired up for the duel and the chance to beat them."
"We've already played Bayern, we know this team. It'll be an open game with two teams that attack. I'm sure the fans will enjoy it. We want to continue in the competition, that's clearly our objective. I don't have any feeling of revenge. In terms of what? The [Champions League] league phase game? It'll be a quarter-final, and for me, that's enough to be motivated."
"They're very secure on the ball, they're technically strong, very physical and run non-stop - but I don't think anyone has a clear advantage," Bayern's skipper told the club website on Friday. "It'll come down to details and avoiding mistakes. They certainly won't be looking forward to playing us."
As the Bavarians prepared for their match against PSG, Vincent Kompany had the whole of his squad, including Coman, at his disposal at Thursday training.
Vincent Kompany hopeful of quick Coman recovery
After the Frenchman left the field just before the hour mark through injury, the Bayern boss provided an update on the speedy winger's situation: "Hopefully it's not that bad. We'll see, a week is obviously very short".
Luis Enrique has transformed PSG into European Champions, with their free-flowing game attracting plenty of admirers. However, his record against Bayern Munich currently stands at: three games, one win and two losses. One of those losses came in 2015, when he was manager of Barcelona, while the other was this season's 1-0 loss in the Champions League. With that being the only managerial meeting between him and Vincent Kompany so far, the Belgian has history on his side going into this mouthwatering clash.

Beginner's luck?
This is PSG's first ever appearance at the Club World Cup, and they'll be looking to go all the way and pick up the trophy at the first attempt. If they were to do so, it would join their Ligue 1, French Cup, French Supercup and Champions League trophies in their silverware cabinet, all of which were won in 2024/25.
There is a wealth of Bundesliga experience amongst the PSG squad, all coming from a handful of players. Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Klassiker rivals Dortmund, are arguably the most notable of those, alongside the World Cup winning Hernandez, while former Eintracht Frankfurt defender Willian Pacho was also a key cog in PSG's recent Champions League win.
The danger men: Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé lead the charge
There are several players that can hurt Bayern in this PSG team, such is their strength in depth. Their front three of Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are almost unstoppable at times, with their direct dribbling and quick combination play giving defences far and wide sleepless nights last season. Likewise, their midfield has three players of exceptional quality, with Vitinha pulling the strings from midfield alongside João Neves and Fabian Ruiz.

Harry Kane: "We can beat anyone"
"It’s going to be another difficult match against PSG, they’ve had an unbelievable season. We already played against them this season and came out on top. We have to try to take the energy and the good feeling into this match. We know it’s going to be difficult but we feel like we can beat anyone when we’re at our top level. We need to recover well now and prepare.”
It's not only intense encounters that these two clubs have shared over the years, but also some top class players. The aforementioned Coman is one player that has donned the colours of both clubs, as is Lucas Hernandez, who is currently at the Parisian side having joined from Bayern in 2023. Juan Bernat, Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting and Tanguy Nianzou are the other players to have represent both sides.
These two sides have met each other 14 times in total over the years, the first of which came in the 1994/95 UEFA Champions League season. The most memorable of those 14, however, was the 2019/20 Champions League final, which saw Bayern lift the trophy after a tense 1-0 victory, with former PSG youth product Kingsley Coman scoring the only goal of the game. Their most recent meeting came in the 2024/25 edition of the tournament, with Bayern again recording a 1-0 win over them, although this time it was Minjae Kim that scored the winner.
Having made Club World Cup history with their 10-0 wins over Auckland in the opening game, bundesliga.com takes a look back through Bayern's most dominant Bundesliga wins.
Bayern Munich: The story so far
Bayern Munich also ended the group stage with six points after two wins and one loss, but finished second in Group C compared to the Parisians' first place finish. A record breaking 10-0 win over Auckland was followed by a narrow victory over Boca Juniors (2-1), before they fell to Benfica in their final group game, losing 1-0. They bounced back in their round of 16 tie with Flamengo, however, maintaining Vincent Kompany's record of never having lost two consecutive games with Bayern by beating the Brazilians 4-2.
Luis Enrique's Champions League winners arrive at the quarter-final stage having displayed equally impressive form as they did in the recent domestic season. They topped Group B, which includes Botafogo, Atletico Madrid and Seattle Sounders on goal difference, having won two (4-0 vs Atletico, 2-0 vs. Seattle) and lost one (1-0 vs. Botafogo) of their three group games. They then met Inter Miami in the round of 16, where they beat a star-studded lineup including Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba 4-0.
