Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies to miss Canada friendlies for honeymoon
Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies will not be part of Canada's squad for upcoming friendlies against Chile, Peru and the USA after head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed the defender is taking a belated honeymoon.
Davies married singer Sheyenne Jen in Paris shortly after the FIFA World Cup 2026, with Canada opting to give their captain additional time away from international duty ahead of the next competitive phase.
"We wanted him in this camp, but he got married shortly after the World Cup," Canada boss Jesse Marsch said in a Zoom call on Tuesday. "The World Cup was also a lot going on with him dealing with himself physically. Then he got into camp with Bayern. We talked about, does he go on honeymoon for half the camp and come in for us?
"He's in really good form, playing really well, looking really fit and feeling really good. We just wanted to make sure that come November, when we need him to be ready for meaningful matches, and then going into March and this whole next cycle, he's set himself up to be ready to commit fully and always do what we need from him for the national team."
Davies endured a frustrating World Cup, with a hamstring injury suffered in the UEFA Champions League with Bayern ruling him out of Canada's group-stage campaign. He returned for just 15 minutes of the round-of-32 clash with South Africa before missing the tournament co-hosts' last-16 exit to Morocco.
After that disappointment, Davies has made a positive start to the new season with Bayern, featuring six times, including three starts, and providing an assist in the Bundesliga Matchday 1 win over VfB Stuttgart. The Ghana-born Canadian also scored his 16th goal for the club in the recent Champions League victory against Bodø/Glimt.
Davies is expected to be involved when Bayern host Union Berlin on 18 September before heading away on his honeymoon. The record champions return to league action after the newly merged September-October international break with a trip to Bavarian neighbours Augsburg on 10 October.
