Alphonso Davies provides World Cup fitness update
Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies says he could yet be fit for co-hosts Canada's FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina on 12 June.
Davies has been sidelined since sustaining a left hamstring injury in Bayern's UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on 6 May.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch had suggested his captain would not be available until the meeting with Qatar on 18 June at the earliest, but the left-back has offered hope of a quicker return.
"We understand how important the first game is, but we understand recovery is always an important thing. If I'm recovering as good as possible, let's see. If not, then there's no need to rush, just keep continuing the recovery," Davies told media on Wednesday.
"Anything is possible in life. For me, it depends on how the recovery is going, how these next few days or this week leading up to the game goes."
Davies has been plagued by injury over the past year. The 25-year-old made just 13 Bundesliga appearances during Bayern's 2025/26 title-winning campaign, and has not played for Canada since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament at the Concacaf Nations League finals in March 2025.
"Mentally, it was very draining, suffering these injuries," Davies admitted, revealing that he has doubted at times whether he would even make the World Cup.
"I was going into a hole where I was doubting myself, but I had that time off and I thought about why I'm doing this and how important this is to me."
Davies will be key for Canada as they bid to reach the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time at the third attempt. The Ghana-born star made history in 2022 by scoring his country's maiden goal at the finals.
The 58-time international has made 249 competitive appearances for Bayern since moving to Germany from Vancouver Whitecaps at 18.
