Bayern welcomed Arsenal to the Allianz Arena for matchday three of the Champions League league phase. Head coach Vincent Kompany made five changes to his starting XI following the Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig, with Manuel Neuer, Josip Stanišić, Tom Bischof, Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry all coming into the side, while Joshua Kimmich was absent due to a bereavement in his family.

Mikel Arteta made two changes for Arsenal, with Jurrien Timber and Noni Madueke starting in place of Ben White and Eberechi Eze.

Eze and Davies trade early blows

Arsenal controlled much of the opening period, and after Bukayo Saka had to be replaced by Eze following an injury, it was the Englishman's replacement who broke the deadlock. In the 25th minute, Martin Ødegaard picked out Eze's run with a long ball, and the forward finished low into the bottom corner to put the visitors ahead.

Bayern responded swiftly: ten minutes later, Harry Kane played Alphonso Davies through with a sharp pass, and the Canadian slid the ball past David Raya to make it 1-1.

Kane's penalty turns the game before Rice levels

Bayern came out the stronger side after the break, with Dayot Upamecano heading against a post and Neuer tipping a Bruno Guimarães header onto the crossbar at the other end. The breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Jurrien Timber blocked Kane's shot with his arm, and the striker converted the resulting penalty to put the hosts 2-1 up.

Arsenal introduced Viktor Gyökeres from the bench, and the substitute's flick set up Declan Rice, who drilled home the equaliser from close range in the 82nd minute to make it 2-2, a scoreline that held until the final whistle.

Bayern - on five points after three league-phase matches - return to Champions League action at Atlético Madrid on 3 November.
