Full time: VfB Stuttgart 2-3 Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim’s brilliant away form this season continues with a fifth win on the road from as many games. Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side were clinical with their chances in the first half, in which Undav missed a penalty for the hosts, before an absorbing second period. Führich and Undav pulled goals back for VfB, but Skov’s thundering strike was the difference as Hoffenheim cemented their place in the top six.

Game on!

Leweling does well on the left and his attempted cross into the middle loops over Baumann and hits the post. It bounces back into the middle where Undav is lurking, completely unmarked, to head in from close range.

Skov restores two-goal advantage

Beier collects possession wide on the left, draws a defender to him and then slides the ball inside to Skov. Anton can’t get close enough to him and the Dane unleashes a powerful, angled drive into the far corner. Brilliant stuff from Hoffenheim!

Comeback on the cards?

What a lovely goal this is. Führich receives the ball near the halfway line, wide on the left. He drives forward, leaving a number of players trailing in his wake, before playing a neat one-two with Undav on the edge of the box and stroking past Baumman to give VfB hope.

Half-time: VfB Stuttgart 0-2 Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim have been absolutely clinical so far today and are good value for their lead. Stuttgart could have got a foothold back in the game around the half-hour mark, but Undav’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Baumann.

In off the post!

Beier is brought down by Rouault inside the area and after a VAR review, a penalty is given. Weghorst smashes it low to Nübel's right and although the VfB goalkeeper guesses the right way, the Dutchman's spot-kick is too precise and bounces in off the base of the upright.

Hoffenheim take the lead!

The visitors break forward at pace and after Beier's shot is well saved by Nübel, the ball falls kindly at the feet of Prömel, arriving in the box. The Stuttgart native coolly strokes in the opener from 16 yards! Can Stuttgart turn this around now without the goal threat of Serhou Guirassy up top?

Watch: All 14 of Guirassy's Bundesliga goals so far this season

"We’re nervous, but positively so," said Stuttgart boss Hoeneß when asked about how his side will cope without Guirassy. "We’re looking forward to the next game against Hoffenheim and we’ll take on this challenge without Serhou’s goals. We have a few players who have been involved in a lot of goals and have scored their own too. We’re totally convinced that for the time Serhou is out, we’ll be able to put in good performances, score goals, be dangerous in attack, and keep picking up points."

Matarazzo's view on Stuttgart

“I think it always has a special charm, just because of the proximity. Playing in Stuttgart too, there’s always a special atmosphere in the stadium. You’ve got two teams who are in good to very good form, so we’re all looking forward to a very good match.”

Hoeneß's view on Hoffenheim

“I think it’s going to be a real top-quality match with a lot of good players on the pitch. We’ll certainly need a really good performance to come away as winners or at least with a point. But that’s obviously our aim. As strong as they are away, we’re in equally good form at home. So, we’re looking forward to the match and we’ll try to produce another top performance and get maximum points.”

Stuttgart rising

Stuttgart have made their best-ever start to a Bundesliga season, with 21 points after eight matches. Their seven wins is as many as they managed across the entire course of 2022/23.
