All one-way traffic in the first half as Darmstadt race into a three-goal advantage. Mehlem scored the game's first goal, before Maglica and Skarke extended the lead. The visitors, meanwhile, have offered little going forward, and need a huge second period if they are to get anything from this game.

Lieberknecht: "We showed our aggression"

Lieberknecht, meanwhile is hoping his side can use that previous victory as inspiration. He explained, "In the Cup last season, we showed our aggression from beginning to end and gave Gladbach no time to breath. We have been discussing that this week, and will look to show the same mentality here."

Seoane: "Win the second balls"

Gladbach manager Gerardo Seoane will be looking for his first Bundesliga win as boss of Die Fohlen, and he is expecting a battle today. "They play a lot of long balls to beat the opponent's press. It'll be important for us to win the second balls, " he said during his pre-match press conference. "We also know that they have a strong target man, but also other weapons like good and quick players on the break, as well as midfield creativity."

Head-to-head

These two sides have faced each other eight times in the Bundesliga, with Darmstadt so far managing just one win - and that came during the 1978/79 campaign. However, Die Lilien were victorious the last time these two met, as they prevailed 2-1 in the second round of 2022/23 DFB Cup.

Defensive work to be done

Darmstadt have conceded most goals in the Bundesliga this term (10) while Gladbach (along with Mainz) are next on the list having shipped nine. Both are unwanted club records at this stage of a top-flight season.

Something's got to give

Incredibly, as many as seven Bundesliga teams are still without a win in the top flight in 2023/24. This Matchday 4 encounter pits two of those sides against each other and is the only such meeting this weekend.

Watch: Gladbach 1-2 Bayern - highlights

Gladbach came from behind to salvage a dramatic 4-4 draw with Augsburg on the opening weekend, but were soundly beaten by Bayer Leverkusen a week later. They showed real spirit in taking the lead against champions Bayern Munich prior to the international break, before succumbing to a 2-1 loss that leaves Gerardo Seaone still searching for his first Bundesliga win as Gladbach head coach.

Watch: Leverkusen 5-1 Darmstadt - highlights

Despite levelling at 1-1 and going in at the break all square, Darmstadt were played off the park in the second half at the BayArena on Matchday 3. The Lilies have now shipped 10 goals and scored just twice, following previous 4-1 and 1-0 losses to Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

Welcome!

With three straight losses to start the season, it's been a chastening reintroduction to the Bundesliga for promoted Darmstadt. Gladbach haven't fared much better, though, with only one point on the board in that time. Who will prevail in Matchday 4's closing fixture? Stay tuned to find out!
