CZICHOS!

Golden chance for Cologne to set up a grandstand finish, but Czichos - playing centre-forward all of a sudden - completely fluffs his lines in front of goal after a great ball from deep.

WHAT A GOAL!

Niklas Dorsch, take a bow. Cologne fail to clear their lines, playing it straight to the midfielder. He takes a touch to get the ball out of his feet before pulling the trigger from well over 25 yards. Top corner, no chance for Schwäbe. Augsburg taking home the three points, but what a way to score your first Bundesliga goal for the club. He'd previously got one for Bayern at the back end of 2017/18 when Jupp Heynckes rotated and played some youngsters against Frankfurt.

DOUBLE CHANGE

Augsburg just made a double switch, and Cologne have now made their first changes. Both attacking with fresh legs in the final third as they throw everything they've got for the final 10 minutes.

SCHMITZ ON TARGET

A Cologne corner is only cleared as far as the right-back, who goes for the side-foot volley. Simple enough hold for Gikiewicz.
76'

ALWAYS ONE

Cologne have now failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their 15 Bundesliga games this season. Frankfurt are the only other team yet to manage a shutout, but they've only played 14 so far.

HAD TO BE HAHN!

He's been Augsburg's most likely tonight, but this was a bit of a gift. Vargas times his run in behind perfectly, cuts back from the byline. Schwäbe dives out and gets a hand to it, but only puts it onto the foot of Hahn to tap home into the empty net.

JUST BEHIND!

Lovely ball up the right wing into the path of Modeste's run. He squares across the six-yard box but puts it just behind Andersson racing through the middle.

Vargas with an excellent cross on the run down the left. Hahn gets his head to it at the front post but only ends up flashing it across goal and not towards it.

FOUL THROW

Not one you see every day at this level, but Iago has just been called for a foul throw.

COLOGNE THE BETTER SIDE?

information
xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
The stats show the hosts should at least be a goal up, but it's still 0-0.

SCHMITZ!

The full-back runs onto Ljubicic's ball into the area and tries to bend it on his left foot, but Oxford puts in a very brave block to keep it away from goal.
59'

AUGSBURG MAKE THE FIRST MOVE

It's Markus Weinzierl who decides to make the first changes. Pederson looks to have taken up a holding position in place of Moravek, who was the more attacking of Augsburg's central midfielders.
57'

GOUWELEEUW SUSPENDED

However, it's the Augsburg captain's fifth yellow of the season, meaning he misses the midweek game against Leipzig.
57'

CAUTIONS FOR BOTH SIDES

Kilian and Gouweleeuw are both shown yellows after a disagreement when Dorsch went down in his own box defending a free-kick. On we go, lads.

ALL SQUARE FOR ATTEMPTS

And on the scoreboard so far. Shot count is 4-1 in Cologne's favour since the break.

HAHN!

Now Augsburg click into gear up the other end. A clever back heel from Gumny into the path of Hahn just right of the D. He goes for the curling effort towards the top corner, but Schwäbe again gets a telling hand to it and pushes the ball over the bar. First-choice Timo Horn is all smiles watching on from the stands.
51'

TONY AGAIN!

The hosts are looking very lively after the break and it's another cross, this time from the right, that causes the danger. Modeste is again the man to meet it with his head, forcing another smart save out of Gikiewicz down by his right post.
49'

MODESTE!

Best chance of the game by far, Just after Duda had a shot blocked, Cologne recycle it over on the left. Hector bends in the cross, Modeste gets his head to it in the middle. He directs it down but Gikiewicz does very well to get there and get a strong left hand to it, pushing it away and out of Andersson's range.
47'

MODESTE OVER

Cologne had a chance early in the first half and now create one in the second, but Modeste gets underneath the cutback from the left and smashes over from around the penalty spot on his left peg.

Players were out warming up during the break but there's no changes as yet.

GOOD OMEN FOR FCA?

Augsburg are unbeaten this season when the score has been goalless at half-time. There was a 1-0 win over Gladbach on Matchday 5, while the two away games also ended 0-0 at Frankfurt and Union.

BETTER FROM KAINZ

He finally gets a good delivery behind a set piece, flashing one in from wide on the left, but Gikiewicz - still yet to face a shot on target - is quickest to react and punches clear through the crowd in his box.

THE BAUMGART RANGE

Flat caps have understandably become all the rage in Cologne this year, featuring prominently at Carnival, but very few inside the RheinEnergie tonight are brave enough to match Steffen Baumgart's short-sleeve approach. Most are wrapped up with jackets and scarves.
41'

NEXT BOOKING

Dorsch has been almost perfect in winning challenges so far tonight, but he's caught out here and opts to pull back Kainz's shirt to stop him getting away. Straightforward yellow.
34'

HECTOR TAKEN DOWN

Good feet from the Cologne captain as he picks up the ball in the inside left and tries to drive through a cap towards the box. Hahn comes in from the side on the slide and takes him down. Free-kick around 25 yards out left of centre, but it's headed clear by the first man.

JUST OVER

Vargas goes high and on his right this time after cutting in from the left, but his curled effort is just a couple of inches too high and clips the roof of the net as he whizzes over.
25'

FIRST CARD

Gregoritsch is late on Schmitz wide on the right and deep in the Cologne half, picking up the first card from referee Patrick Ittrich.
24'

VARGAS JUST WIDE

The Switzerland international is in again down the left and goes low across goal with his shot, pulling it just inches wide of the far post.
21'

CALIGIURI OVER

Gouweleeuw pings a free-kick over the top into the run of Vargas down the left. He crosses hoping to find a teammate on the end of it. The ball bounces through for Caligiuri, who takes a touch before winding up from a narrow angle, but it's high, wide and not so handsome from the Italian.
20'

CONTRASTING TACTICS

Cologne have delivered six crosses from open play already. Augsburg are yet to try one yet.
20'

MODESTE THIS TIME

Another Cologne cross from the right, on this occasion from Schmitz. It's over Andersson, which maybe catches Modeste off guard only a yard or two behind him, and the ball rather hits him in the face and goes wide instead of him connecting with a proper header.
13'

GREGORITSCH OFFSIDE

Augsburg have the ball in the net as Gregoritsch gets in behind and lobs it past Schwäbe, but the linesman's flag goes up. It's close but a VAR check confirms the call.

SO CLOSE FROM HAHN!

Now Augsburg go even closer. It's a great attempt from Hahn from 20 yards, latching onto the bouncing ball. It's dipping under the bar until Schwäbe gets a vital hand on it to tip it over.
2'

ANDERSSON!

First chance comes early and it falls to just the man Cologne want in the middle for a cross. Andersson gets his head to it from the right but nods it just wide of the left post.

MD15 UNDER WAY

The stadium DJ held out until the very last second before switching off "Mir ston zu Dir", but the crowd keep going at the game gets going.

CHANCE FOR GREGORITSCH

Michael Gregoritsch makes his first Bundesliga start for Augsburg since 16 December 2020 and a 1-0 win in Bielefeld. The Austrian has since made 19 substitute appearances, with seven this season. He's scored off the bench in both the last two games.
camera-photo

TIME FOR TONY?

Modeste scored all six of Cologne’s goals between the October and November international breaks (4x Bundesliga, 2x DFB Cup). But the club’s eight-goal top scorer in the league hasn’t struck in any of the last three games – his joint-worst run of the season. He’s also only got one goal in 11 Bundesliga games against Augsburg.

NOT SO HAPPY TRAVELLERS

While Cologne are still unbeaten at home, Augsburg haven’t won on their travels in 13 attempts – an unwanted club record in the Bundesliga – going back to February in Mainz. They’ve managed just three draws in that time, also only scoring three goals away from home this season.

PLUCKY BILLY GOATS

Cologne have only lost three times this season – only Bayern have suffered fewer defeats (two) – and are unbeaten in their last four. But they are down in ninth due to the fact they’ve had a league-high seven draws. They have also thrown away the lead five times – again, the most in the division – but gone on to draw each time, costing them 10 points.

WATCH: AUGSBURG 2-3 COLOGNE

Cologne claimed a 3-2 win in Augsburg the last time the sides met – racing into a 3-0 lead inside 33 minutes before the hosts began their attempt at a comeback. That was only the Billy Goats’ second Bundesliga victory over the Bavarians, having failed to win in 12 since the first-ever encounter in October 2011 (3-0 in Cologne). The games between then saw six Augsburg wins and six draws.

AUGSBURG TEAM NEWS

Markus Weinzierl welcomes back captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and fellow first-choice centre-back Reece Oxford as part of four changes to the team that lost 3-2 at home to Bochum. Raphael Framberger is injured and Frederik Winther drops to the bench. Arne Maier is ill, so Jan Moravek gets the nod in midfield for his first start since Matchday 2. Andi Zeqiri misses out with a knock, with last week’s substitute goalscorer Michael Gregoritsch starting up top. The only time Weinzierl has made more change this season was five for their game in Dortmund on Matchday 7.

COLOGNE TEAM NEWS

Steffen Baumgart makes two changes from his team that drew 1-1 at Arminia Bielefeld last Saturday. Captain Jonas Hector is back after missing that with injury, so Benno Schmitz reverts to right-back and Kingsley Schindler drops out. Ellyes Skhiri is ill, so Salih Özcan will anchor the midfield while Sebastian Andersson comes in to partner Anthony Modeste up top.
