Full-time: Paderborn 2-1 Kiel
Bilbija's coolness in front of goal secures the important three points for the hosts, though based on their share of play, Paderborn could have wrapped it up earlier. Kiel fought their way back and equalised impressively through Gigović, but in the end, Paderborn's persistence paid off.

Paderborn win it at the death!
It's pandemonium here at Paderborn's stadium as Bilbija drives into the penalty area from the half-right position, pulls back on the right, lets Zec slide past and finishes with a crisp left-footed shot into the corner to steal the three points at the game's end!

Hopeful passes
There's not much structure in the build-up play anymore. Instead, Kiel and Paderborn are trying with long balls. However, they are creating danger whenever the ball bounces in front of the penalty area and the goalkeepers don't come out to deal with them decisively enough.

Nine minutes added on
That's a statement. Due to the many substitutions and players suffering from cramp, both sides now have enough time to score the winning goal.

Plagued by cramp, Gigović now leaves the pitch, his work done.

Gigović with the equaliser!
Kiel earn a free-kick from a central position through Gigović. The fouled player takes it himself, but can only do so after Engelns, who was suffering from cramp, leaves the pitch. The ball flies over the wall, hits the underside of the crossbar and goes into the net. What a finish!

Relegation curse
Every year, the teams relegated from the Bundesliga struggle enormously at the start of the season in Bundesliga 2. Last season, Cologne and Darmstadt lost their opening matches, in 2023 it was Schalke and Hertha - and today Kiel and Bochum are trailing. In the last five seasons, no team relegated from the Bundesliga has started their campaign off with a win (the last time it happened was in 2019 with Stuttgart and Nuremberg)!
80'
Sloppy in possession
Kiel build up play, looking to move the ball from the centre to the right wing with a low pass. However, Zec's pass is off target the opponents get a throw-in at the halfway line.

The hosts go to the bench
Paderborn want to secure their lead now. Grimaldi comes on for Copado and Klaas for Bätzner. Will they be able to protect their advantage until the final whistle?

In the nick of time
Nekic throws himself in front of a shot to make the block after Paderborn combine on the right with Copado and Castaneda before reaching the penalty area.

Paderborn keep pressing
Despite the disallowed goal, the home side aren't letting their heads drop. They continue to launch attacks down the left flank. Obermair is one of Paderborn's most active creative catalysts.
61'
Goal disallowed
It's a quick attack by the hosts through the centre. However, Bilbija handles the ball on the edge of the penalty area, meaning the subsequent goal by Engelns is correctly disallowed.

Taking too long again
Gigović manages to free himself on the left wing and reaches the corner of the penalty area. But instead of looking for a shot or a cross, he takes the extra touch and the chance fizzles out.

Half-time: Paderborn 1-0 Kiel
It's been a very lively Bundesliga 2 encounter between these sides so far. Both teams are not holding back, wanting to disrupt the opponent early with a high press. However, the hosts are more direct going forward and took the lead thanks to a thunderbolt from Hoffmeier.

Delicate chip
That was almost 2-0! Bilbija is sent through down the right flank. The angle is unfavourable, forcing the forward to attempt a chip, which flies just wide of the Kiel goal.
43'
Paderborn applying pressure
Shortly before the end of the first half, it looks increasingly likely the hosts will make it 2-0. Kiel are further away from equalising, as they are being pushed back into their own half by Paderborn.
41'
Into the book he goes
Nekic is the latest player to be shown a yellow card. The Kiel defender holds onto his opponent at the halfway line and is cautioned.
39'
Near carbon copy
On the right wing, Curda fights his way through, winning a set-piece against Tolkin. Bätzner plays the corner short. Again, Hoffmeier arrives from deep to take the shot, however this time, the Kiel players manage to block it.
36'
One too many
A brilliant attack from Kiel sees Gigović cross the ball from an advanced position high up the left flank, finding Skrzybski in the centre. Instead of going for the shot from just outside the box, he turns, but is then blocked by the opponent. There could have been more in that...

Collectors item
Hoffmeier had gone 77 matches without scoring in Bundesliga 2, with the Paderborn player's only previous second division goal coming against Regensburg in September 2022, nearly three years ago.

Hoffmeier unleashes a rocket!
What a screamer! A corner from the hosts is cleared to the edge of the box. Hoffmeier doesn't hesitate and smashes the ball with a first-time volley into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead.

Kiel with a shooting opportunity
26'
First yellow
It's an unnecessary booking for Zec, who tries to prevent a quick counter-attack for the hosts by holding onto the ball for a long time before giving it back to the Paderborn players for a throw-in.
24'
Kiel's turn
The visitors have themselves their first dangerous attack. Bernhardsson cleverly controls the ball on the right wing before crossing it into the middle; but he doesn't find a teammate. Although Kiel remain in possession, a shot fails to materialise.
21'
Pressing eases off
Unlike in the early stages, the visitors are no longer pressing so high up the pitch. The Paderborn players are now playing short, quick passes and establishing themselves in the Kiel half, but without creating any notable goalscoring opportunities.
18'
Foul drawn, breath taken
The home side launch another attack down the left and cross into the middle, but there's no one there to receive it. Still under pressure, Tolkin then wins a free kick for his team near the byline on the right side, allowing the Storks time to catch their breath!
15'
Header just over
Paderborn take a throw-in from the right touchline, sending the ball deep into the Kiel penalty area. Engelns rises high and attempts a header from 10 yards out. His effort flies narrowly over the bar. Collides with Nekic in the air, both players need treatment after the chance, however, they are now both able to continue.

Tolkin breaks up the attack
Kiel lose the ball up front and the hosts counter-attack quickly down the right. Tolkin impedes Copado unfairly, but the subsequent free-kick near the touchline comes to nothing.
7'
Speculative
So far, the home side have been trying to maintain control under constant pressure from Kiel. Most recently, Castaneda tried a shot from distance, but it flew well over the bar.
5'
No way through down the right
The visitors manage to beat Paderborn's press at the halfway line with two quick passes. However, a subsequent attempted through ball is overhit and ends up falling to Paderborn keeper Seimen.
2'
Visitors causing trouble
Kiel seem to have a specific game plan to press Paderborn, forcing a throw-in deep in the opposition half.

New look for the Storks
The upheaval following their relegation from the Bundesliga wasn't that significant, with eight players starting today who were already part of the squad at the end of the top-flight season. The only new faces for Kiel today come in the forms of Schwab, Krumrey and Davidsen.
Paderborn team news
Paderborn get their campaign underway under their new manager and immediately opt to field three new summer signings: Dennis Seimen starts in goal, while Nick Bätzner and Lucas Copado will be looking to provide the threat in attack. All three played in the 3. Liga last season (for Stuttgart's U23s, Wiesbaden and Cottbus).
Ralf Kettemann on facing Kiel
"We're up for it and looking forward to getting started. They are very versatile. It's challenging to play against them and defend against them."
Marcel Rapp on facing Paderborn
"Paderborn is a team that loves playing football. I'm personally really looking forward to it because it will be so different to our friendly matches. I'm very happy to be a coach, but in my heart I'm still a football fan."
Skrzybski loves Paderborn
Steven Skrzybski has scored in three of his last four Bundesliga 2 matches against Paderborn.
Spectacle guaranteed
A total of 25 goals were scored in the last five matches between these teams. In fact, they have each found the net 21 times across their 10 Bundesliga 2 meetings to date.
Fond memories, part II
Paderborn's last win over Kiel was a 7-2 home triumph on 20 August 2022. They've never scored more in 274 home matches in Bundesliga 2, though did win 8-3 in Aue once.
Fond memories of Paderborn
In the 2023/24 season, in which Kiel won promotion to the top flight, the Storks won both matches against Paderborn (2-1 at home, 4-0 away). Paderborn have not suffered such a heavy home defeat since then.
