Full-time: Hannover 1-0 Kaiserslautern

Hannover get their reward for a committed and dominant performance. Visiting goalkeeper Krahl kept Kaiserslautern in the game for a long time, but was powerless against Aseko Nkili's goal. In the closing stages, the hosts ran down the clock and didn't allow their guests a way back into the game.

Lautern still looking

The visitors are trying everything to equalise. In the last few minutes, cross after cross has been flying into the hosts' penalty area. So far, however, either Hannover's defence or keeper Noll has been there to save.

Kunze stops a counter-attack

The former Hannover player pulls on his opponent's shirt. That's a clear yellow card.

The spell is broken!

Brilliant through ball from Ghiță to the substitute Aseko Nkili, who stays cool in front of Krahl and slots it home. The lead is absolutely deserved!

Titz brings on ex-Lauterer

Yokota replaces Bundu, who worked hard but didn't have much luck in front of goal today.

Slapstick

Curious scene in the Hannover penalty area. Neubauer plays a back pass to Noll. He doesn't reach it and is lucky that it rolls against the outside of the net.
67'

Krahl to the rescue again

The goalkeeper is by far the best Lautern player on the pitch. He deserves a huge pat on the back if he can keep a clean sheet today.

Centimetres away from the lead!

Perfect free-kick position for Hannover. Leopold takes the ball about 20 yards out centrally in front of the goal. His attempt is slightly deflected by the wall and misses the goal by a whisker. Krahl would have had no chance there.
60'

Krahl again!

After the subsequent free-kick, Pichler wins the aerial duel in the centre and heads the ball towards the bottom left from about eight metres out. Krahl gets down and makes the save.

Tactical foul

Sichler stops a Hannover attack and receives a yellow card.

Asta gets a shot off

Suddenly Lautern have a really good opportunity. Emreli finds the advancing Asta, who takes the ball with the outside of his boot from the right-hand side of the penalty area. In the end, it's half a metre wide.

Everything under control

The hosts deserve to be in front. Unlike in the early stages of the match, Hannover are now creating good chances.

Hannover stepping up

Hannover have an overlap as Pichler sets up Bundu on the left side of the penalty area. He has plenty of time alone in front of Krahl, but his finish is too weak to trouble the Lautern keeper.

Pichler goes close

Nice build-up from the hosts. Chakroun finds Bundu, who heads it across directly to Pichler. The Hannover striker arrives just a fraction too late.

Half-time: Hannover 0-0 Kaiserslautern

Hannover dominated from the start and had plenty of possession, while the visitors remained defensively compact for long periods. As the match progressed, the hosts increasingly found gaps and could have taken the lead through Bundu, but Krahl in the Lautern goal was equal to the task each time.

Hannover want the lead

It's Bundu again and again! The home side are moving the ball around and pushing the visitors deep into their own half. A sharp cross from Bundu is safely held by Krahl.
42'

Bundu remains dangerous

For the second time, Krahl prevents Lautern from falling behind. After a long throw-in, Bundu outmuscles Redondo in the six-yard box, turns and shoots from a tight angle. Krahl gets his legs closed in time and makes the save.

Tomiak!

The defender has too much space in midfield and takes a shot from about 25 metres. His powerful strike narrowly misses the top right corner.
35'

Increasing tempo

Pichler is played through in the penalty area and tries to cross the ball into the middle. It's deflected by a defender and becomes awkward for Krahl, who ultimately manages to defuse the situation.
33'

Crafty Redondo

Redondo gets the ball on the right wing during a counter-attack and sees - under pressure from Matsuda - that Noll is a long way off his line. The goalkeeper stretches, but Redondo's shot narrowly misses the left post anyway.
32'

Bundu whirls on the wing

Bundu impressively gets past Gyamfi and lays the ball back to the edge of the penalty area. However, Leopold's shot is blocked.

Huge chance for Hannover!

Chakrou marches unchallenged through the centre, slips the ball through to Bundu, who is alone in the penalty area in front of Krahl. Hegets a shot away but the Lautern goalkeeper spreads himself wide and makes a brilliant save with his foot.

Hannover can't find a way through

We're still waiting for the first goal-scoring opportunity. Hannover are making an effort and keeping possession within their own ranks, but Lautern are well-positioned.
17'

Taibi goes into a risky challenge with Şahin and catches him on the foot. Referee Bacher shows a yellow card.
14'

Hannover keeping the ball moving

The hosts are in control but Kaiserslautern are standing compact and defending confidently so far.

The stage is set

We have a sold-out stadium and two ambitious teams - who will get the start to the season they want?

Two completely revamped teams

While Hannover starts with eight new signings, Kaiserslautern have six with Kunze, Asta, Gyamfi, Şahin Emreli and Prtajin.

All change at Hannover

With Tomiak, Leopold and Chakroun, only three players in the starting XI played for Hannover last season.

Torsten Lieberknecht on facing Hannover

"They play very complex football, so it will be important for us to immediately demonstrate our physicality. Hannover should realise that with Kaiserslautern, they perhaps don't have the opponent they would have wished for."

Christian Titz on facing Kaiserslautern

"They are a team that have changed again compared to last season. They have quality on the ball and in their attacking play. They will want to do well in the league."

Encouraging record in the dugout

Kaiserslautern head coach Torsten Lieberknecht has won both of the previous encounters against Christian Titz by a 1-0 scoreline. They last met on Matchday 33 of the 2022/23 season, when Lieberknecht's Darmstadt defeated Titz's Magdeburg 1-0 and were able to celebrate their promotion to the Bundesliga early.

Back in 1954

Hannover celebrated their most significant victory against Kaiserslautern on 23 May 1954 in front of 76,000 spectators at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion. Despite falling behind, the Lower Saxony side won 5-1 under manager Helmut "Fiffi" Kronsbein to become German champions for the second and, to date, last time. Many Kaiserslautern players, such as the Walter brothers, became World Cup winners just a few weeks later.
camera-photo

On equal footing

The teams have met 40 times in the Bundesliga (most recently in 2011/12), but this is only their ninth encounter in Bundesliga 2 (three wins each, plus a pair of draws). However, Kaiserslautern have only lost one of the last six.
