Last season the Wolves' away form was actually superior to their home form, as they collected 27 points on the road and 16 at the Volkswagen Arena. They also won more away games (eight) than they did during their 2008/09 title winning season (five).

Simonis ahead of Bundesliga bow

“I’m looking forward to it – maybe a bit nervous, but in a good way. We had a tough pre-season, but we wanted to have tough opponents. We had a good game against Hemelingen [in the DFB Cup], but now it starts in earnest. Heidenheim deserve so much credit – they have their own style of play and don’t change it to adapt to their opponents.”

Can Simonis improve on compatriots?

New Wolfsburg boss Paul Simonis is the fourth Dutchman to take charge of the Wolves. He'll be hoping to do better than his predecessors, though. Henk van Meteren, Andries Jonker and Mark van Bommel all failed to see out a full season.

Both teams enjoyed big wins to kick off the season in the DFB Cup first round on Saturday. Heidenheim eased past Bahlingen with a 5-0 win, while Wolfsburg went even further by putting nine without reply past Hemelingen. Expect a much tighter affair in this opening Bundesliga encounter.

Frank's legacy

September marks 18 years since Frank Schmidt took over as Heidenheim coach, guiding them from the fifth tier all the way to the Bundesliga and even Europe. In that same time, Wolfsburg have had 18 different coaches.
