Full-time: Freiburg 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen

What an end to this game! Despite not contributing much to this contest, Leverkusen have found two goals and a point out of nowhere. Freiburg looked comfortable with their two goal lead, but a winding run from Wirtz reduced the deficit, and put them in position to equalise. Having been here many times before, Leverkusen dug in and found a late goal from Tah.

Tah scores, 2-2!

What a turnaround! Having not looked like scoring this evening, Leverkusen now have their second goal and the equaliser. Tah joined the attack in search of a late goal, and he found exactly what he was looking for, with his flicked header from an in-swinging cross finding Müller's far bottom corner.

They couldn't, could they?

Having not looked capable of rescuing a result, the visitors are back in the game all of a sudden. Could they achieve a surprise comeback?

They've pulled one back!

And it's another brilliant solo goal from Wirtz, who drives toward the edge of the box before shooting toward Müller's near post, hitting the inside of the post before seeing his shot bounce in.

Work to do

What a start, it's 2-0!

A floated Dōan cross is nodded down by Manzambi by the six-yard box, where Adamu is tussling with Hincapié. In attempting to get there first before the Freiburg forward, the Ecuador international prods it into his own net.

Half-time: Freiburg 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen

In what was a tense first half, it is Freiburg who head into the break with a goal advantage. The visitors dominated the opening exchanges but were rather blunt in attack, while Freiburg grew in confidence as the half went on and caused the visitors real problems. They eventually got their reward for their hard work, with Eggestein thumping his side into the lead just before the whistle blew for half-time.

What a goal! Freiburg lead!

Having assessed his options, Eggestein gets the ball out of his feet before firing a shot just inside Kovář's near post from around 25 yards out. A sensational strike!

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals> xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals> goals).
Both sides are still sizing each other up, with neither looking likely to opening the scoring right now.

Plenty of positives

After last season's successes, Leverkusen may be disappointed to not have defended either of their league or cup triumphs, however, they have only lost two league games so far and went as far as the DFB Cup semi-finals. While they exited the Champions League at the last 16 stage, their European campaign did include a victory over current semi-finalists Inter Milan (1-0).

Going in the right direction

Freiburg are eight points away from equalling their best ever Bundesliga points total with three games to spare, marking a brilliant debut season for coach Julian Schuster. They have also made a huge improvement from last season, when they finished tenth on 42 points.

More on those teams

Noah Atubolu returns to the Freiburg bench as he nears a return from a shoulder injury, while Kovář maintains his place in the Leverkusen net. Tella, Andrich and Arthur all drop to the bench having starred in the previous win over Augsburg, with Hincapié, Aleix García and Frimpong coming in. For the hosts, Manzambi for Höler is the only change from their win against Wolfsburg.

Chance for Freiburg

The hosts, meanwhile, have a big opportunity to move move ahead in the UEFA Champions League qualification race. Should they win today, they will move three points clear of Borussia Dortmund in fourth with two games remaining.

Title race all but over?

Bayern are not yet officially champions, but they're as good as. Their 3-3 draw with RB Leipzig on Saturday means they are now nine points clear of Leverkusen, who can now only finish level on points with Bayern. The Bavarians' +61 goal difference is 30 better than the Werkself's, too, meaning Xabi Alonso would need a huge goal swing in their favour too.

Julian Schuster on Leverkusen

"Leverkusen have come on leap and bounds over the past two years. Xabi Alonso has done a fantastic job. They'll want to make our lives difficult, regardless of Bayern [Munich]'s result on Saturday. We played well in the reverse fixture, before falling behind late in the first half. Then they ran away with it. We need to be positive in these kind of games and take our chances."
camera-photo

Xabi Alonso on Freiburg

"Freiburg are a good team. Some of the players there have played together for a long time and they're very good from set-pieces. [The chance to qualify for the Champions League] is an additional motivation for them, but it also motivates us when we know team really want to beat us."

Xabi Alonso: One of the Bundesliga's greatest

The Spaniard has had an incredible impact on the Bundesliga since taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen, breaking numerous records and, ultimately, guiding the club to their first league title.

Sat in second

With a 12 point gap between themselves and third, Leverkusen have secured second place for this season. While they'll be disappointed that they couldn't retain their title, they did only lose twice all season, with their habit for draws giving Bayern the advantage this year.

Almost

With just three games remaining, Freiburg are in fourth with the possibility of reaching the Champions League for the first time ever. They are just two points above Leipzig though, so will need a big result against second placed Leverkusen if they're to increase that cushion.

More MD32 stakes

Freiburg will secure at least sixth place and a place in next season's Conference League play-offs if they win AND Mainz lose AND Bremen don't win, OR they win AND Mainz lose AND Leipzig don't win.
camera-photo

MD32 stakes

Leverkusen will still need to win to deny Bayern the 2024/25 title even if the Bavarians don't win the day before. Even a Bayern draw and three points for Xabi Alonso's men would leave the league leaders all but mathematically champions. Freiburg will be looking for a win themselves to cement their hold on a top-four place.
