Full-time: Leipzig 1-2 Mainz

Things looked ominous for Mainz when they went behind inside 60 seconds through Xavi and were under the cosh in the opening minutes, but they really got going as the game wore on and struck two goals in quick succession early in the second half through Amiri and Burkardt. The home side just didn’t have a response and are now three points behind the 05ers, who move up to fourth, ahead of Freiburg’s trip to Augsburg on Sunday.

Keeper's up...

Gulácsi is into the Mainz box as Leipzig look to snatch that goal at the death, but the corner comes to nothing. That should be that.

Added time

Four additional minutes. Can Leipzig snatch an equaliser? Can Mainz hold on to go fourth?
90'

Very nearly...

Leipzig throwing everything forward now. They almost get a huge stroke of luck as Mwene hacks at a ball into the six-yard box and somehow slices it over his own bar. Zentner then snaffles the ensuing corner.
90'

Šeško again

This time with his foot as Nedeljkovic cuts the ball back. Zentner is equal to it, though, and parries the shot over his bar.

Good corner from Raum. Šeško gets above Da Costa but can't put his header on target.

Amiri off, Maloney on

A very good display by Amiri, but he's got nothing left in the tank. On comes USMNT international Maloney to try and see this out for Mainz.

Mainz going for it

It's 8-3 in favour of Mainz for shots in the second half. Baku's effort was Leipzig's first since the 50th minute.

Baku wide

Leipzig's Mainz-born wide man has a low crack from 25 yards. Zentner throws in a dive but the ball curls away from his right post and wide.
74'

And again!

Mainz keep on the front foot and hit the left post not just once more but twice. Amiri's shot comes back off the upright and against the legs of Burkardt. He doesn't know too much about it as the ball bounces off him and the frame of the goal again.
74'

Off the post!

A lovely disguised pass from Sano into Burkardt, who's left with his head in his hands as his shot comes back off the post.
73'

Double change

Openda has still never scored against Mainz in four attempts in the Bundesliga (same for Šeško as it stands). He's hooked for Nedeljkovic, probably looking to move Baku further forward.

Sano over

The Japanese midfielder is free on the edge of the box and quickly picked out. He goes for a big curling effort. Not far over.

Mainz going for it

Four of those Leipzig efforts came in the first five minutes. They've struggled to create much more in the ensuing 60+ minutes.

A test of top-four credentials

Mainz last won a Bundesliga game in which they trailed on the final day of last season, beating Wolfsburg 3-1. That helped keep them up, but now they're set to move into the top four.

The man for away days

Burkardt has now got nine of his 14 goals this season away from home, which is the most of any player in the division alongside Omar Marmoush, who left in January. The Mainz man has actually netted in 10 of his last 12 away appearances in the Bundesliga.

Burkardt turns it around!

What a lovely goal. Amiri with the pass into the feet of Burkardt in the box. He controls it with his left to roll it away from Bitshiabu before slotting past the defender and Gulácsi from left of goal to put the visitors in front in style.

Both sides have had their chances. A goal apiece is probably fair eight now.

Half-time: Leipzig 1-0 Mainz

The game got off to a blistering start as Xavi scored Leipzig’s earliest home goal in their Bundesliga history. The hosts had a string of other half chances in the opening minutes, before Mainz found their feet and halted Leipzig’s progress. There have been opportunities at both ends but nothing else telling as home side go into the break ahead and back up to fourth place as it stands.

Lee off target

Perhaps Mainz's best chance as Lee gets between two defenders and meets a deflected cross from the right before Gulácsi can claim it. But the South Korean can't turn the ball on target stooping for his header.
42'

Denied

Xavi picks up the ball on the edge of the Mainz box. He plays a lovely one-two with Vermeeren, who knocks it back into the Dutchman's path with his heel. Hanche-Olsen is alert to the danger, though, and slides across to prevent a free shot on goal.

What's at stake?

Leipzig battled back to draw here against Heidenheim last week, but it saw them leapfrogged in the table by both Freiburg (a point ahead in fourth) and Mainz (ahead in goal difference on fifth). It means a draw would take them both back above Freiburg, but three points for either would do their Champions League qualification hopes a world of good.

Leipzig team news

Marco Rose also makes two alternations, although in Leipzig's case from Wednesday's DFB Cup quarter-final win over Wolfsburg. Péter Gulácsi returns in goal as expected for Maarten Vandevoordt, plus Amadou Haidara gets the nod over Kevin Kampl in midfield.

Mainz team news

At the back, Dominik Kohr serves a suspension for 10 yellow cards, with Andreas Hanche-Olsen slotting in for him.

Bo Henriksen's view on Leipzig

"We can see from the table that it'll be an important game, but it's no more important than the last or the next. We need to perform well to hopefully head back to Mainz with a point or three. But we obviously always play to win. Leipzig are unbeaten in six in the Bundesliga. They've played three games this week and are a very good team, but that's not important for us. We only look at ourselves."
camera-photo

Marco Rose's view on Mainz

"Mainz have one of the best defences in the division. They don't allow you much, defend incredibly hard. But they don't just sit back, also want to press and attack the opposition high up the pitch. It could turn into a wild game at times. We need to win those 50-50 duels and not let it get too wild. Our job is then to make sure we get at their goal."
