Hats off to Leipzig

Marco Rose's men have performed admirably here. Considering the amount of ins and high-profile outs at the club over the summer, Die Roten Bullen have pinged it about and taken their chances brilliantly. They'll be a force to be reckoned with once again this season.

Sesko again

Another shot from the 20-year-old. This one is dragged wide of the near post.

Bayern's bad memories

Of course, Bayern's last official home game was also against Leipzig at the tail end of last season. The defending champions lost that 3-1. The last time FCB suffered two home defeats in a row with a total of six goals conceded was more than 22 years ago under Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Teams out!

Both sets of teams have made their way out onto the pitch and we're all set for kick-off at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern absentees

As we await the appearance of both sides here it's worth remembering that the hosts are without some big names tonight. New signing from Dortmund, Raphaël Guerreiro, is out with a calf injury while Manuel Neuer continues his recovery from a leg break. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (knee) and Thomas Müller (hip) will play no part.

Hello Harry

Welcome to Bayern Munich, Herr Harry Kane!

Big changes in Leipzig

As many as six of the players who started for Leipzig in last May's Bundesliga win at the Allianz Arena are no longer around. Gvardiol, Halstenberg, Laimer, Szoboszlai, Nkunku and Silva have all since parted Saxony so it will be fascinating to see how Marco Rose's side gel tonight. Those who are present in the starting line-up tonight who competed in the aforementioned Bundesliga game are Blaswich, Simakan, Orban and Olmo.

Bayern team news

With Harry Kane on the bench, Mathys Tel gets the nod up front for the defending Supercup champions. Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano start in central defence, meaning new arrival Min-Jae Kim is on the bench. Konrad Laimer starts against his old side.

Leipzig team news

Tonight's visitors also have a very recent signing on the bench. Defender Castello Lukeba arrived just yesterday from Lyon and he joins fellow new signings Nicolas Seiwald, Benjamin Sesko, and Fabio Carvalho among the Leipzig subs tonight. There are competitive debuts for forward Lois Openda and Xavi Simons in Marco Rose's starting XI.

In Munich "to win"

Leipzig's double DFB Cup winning midfielder Kevin Kampl wasn't holding back when asked about his team's chances in the Bavarian capital this evening. "One thing is clear, we’re going to Munich to win," the 32-year-old insisted. "We’ve got the chance to lift a trophy and you don’t get that sort of chance very often. We therefore want to make the most of this opportunity."

Solid pre-season

Bayern won four of their five friendly games as they prepared for the defence of their Bundesliga title over the summer. Those victories, combined with some intensive work on the training pitch, led coach Tuchel to reveal, "There's been a good spirit and high quality in training for several weeks." No doubt those spirits will have been lifted even further with the arrival of a certain new star striker at Säbener Straße.

Last time out

Leipzig go into tonight's match in good spirits knowing their very first win in Munich against Bayern came less than three months ago. Die Roten Bullen's 3-1 triumph last 20 May threw the title race wide open with Konrad Laimer - now of Bayern - netting an equaliser before a couple of Leipzig penalties sealed the deal for Marco Rose's men.

Will he, won't he?

With Kane-mania sweeping the world, all eyes will be on the Allianz Arena tonight for a glimpse of the main man, who says he is keen to feature against Leipzig. Bayern's new No. 9 said he'll, "hopefully be able to play," in tonight's Supercup. Rest assured there'll be plenty of eyes on Thomas Tuchel's team sheet when it drops a little later.

Kane is a Bayern player!

Harry Kane has completed his sensational switch to Bayern Munich to Tottenham Hotspur, and has been registered in time to play against RB Leipzig in the Supercup.

Leipzig's "huge challenge"

RBL boss Marco Rose has been giving his thoughts ahead of Saturday's blockbuster at the Allianz Arena. "We will face what is undeniably a huge challenge in Munich, but we are excited, as we know that our title win in June has earned us the right to compete in this game," the tactician said. "The boys thrive when playing against this standard of team. After this fixture, it will be clear where we stand and how we can improve."

'Red against Racism'

During Saturday's Supercup game, Bayern's shirts will contain the slogan, 'Red against Racism.' A club statement reads: "The cross-club initiative, which was launched three years ago, sees the German record champions regularly taking a stand against all discrimination and for diversity."
camera-photo

Lukeba lands in Saxony

A big boost for Leipzig ahead of Saturday's Supercup showdown against Bayern with Die Roten Bullen announcing the arrival of 20-year-old French defender Castello Lukeba from Lyon on a five-year deal. "I knew that Leipzig was absolutely the right move for me; I can’t wait to play football here," Lukeba said.
camera-photo

Müller and Choupo-Moting in contention

Tuchel has also stated that both Thomas Müller and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could feature against Leipzig after returning to training from injury. On the pair, Tuchel told the press that they have "completed three training sessions with the team. They have worked hard and are currently pain-free. If that continues, then they could be options for the matchday squad."
camera-photo

Tuchel: "Leipzig will be a good test"

Bayern boss Tuchel has been in front of the media on the eve of the Supercup and it's clear he means business ahead of his first full season in charge. "Our aims are clear: we want to win the league and the cup and enjoy a deep run in the Champions League," he said. "This will be a good test. We hope that we will be able to transfer the energy that we're seeing in training right now to the game tomorrow."
camera-photo

Forsberg: "It's going to be exciting"

Speaking to bundesliga.com in the build-up to the match, Emil Forsberg outlined his thoughts on the occasion: “It's going to be exciting. It's a big game. We are training for it now, preparing. It's going to be a difficult game. They've also had their pre-season now with Thomas Tuchel and they brought some players in. It's going to be interesting. It's going to be a tough game but, of course, we want to win it.”

Time to buck the trend?

Of the 23 official Supercup matches that have been held, the defending Bundesliga champions have won 15 times. The DFB Cup winners (or beaten finalists or league runners-up, in the cases that a team won the double) have won on eight occasions - but not since 2015, when Wolfsburg overcame Bayern on penalties.

Head-to-head

In the seven Bundesliga seasons these teams have shared to date, Bayern have had the upper hand overall in terms of results. There have been 17 competitive meetings, of which Leipzig have won two, drawn six and lost nine.
camera-photo

Laimer poised for reunion

Konrad Laimer made the switch from Leipzig to Bayern earlier this summer, so the Supercup presents a swift reunion with his former colleagues. “It’s just the way it is," he told bundesliga.com when asked about facing Marco Rose's side in his first competitive game for Bayern. "I think I'm the type of person who always wants to win, whether it's a competitive match, a friendly, or even playing football in the pool. I'm looking forward to seeing the guys again briefly before and after the game. But during those 90 minutes I want to win, and that's all there is to it.”

Olmo eyeing improvement

After a slow start to the 2022/23 campaign, Leipzig's Dani Olmo - who recently signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2027 - is keen for his side to be quicker out of the blocks this term. “Last season we didn’t start so well but afterwards had good dynamics," the Spain international told bundesliga.com. "We won a lot of games in a row. This is the goal, to keep winning. Of course, you can make mistakes and lose some points at any point but the goal is just to keep going forward all the time. This season it is our goal again to keep going and to try win every game.”

The Supercup explained

The Supercup is the traditional curtain-raiser on the domestic season in Germany as the Bundesliga champions take on the DFB Cup holders. It previously existed between 1987 and 1996, but was organised by the DFB (German FA). It was then replaced by the Ligapokal (League Cup) until the DFL re-introduced the Supercup in 2010. The most successful team in the competition is Bayern with 10 titles, while Leipzig - runners-up in 2022 - are the 13th different club to compete for the prize.
