A standing ovation for Nebel as he comes off after his efforts, with Rösch on for his Bundesliga debut.
86'

FÜRSTNER DEBUT

The 33-year-old midfielder comes on here for the final minutes, replacing the Tauer who has been fantastic on his first start in the Bundesliga.
85'

HUGE CHANCE FOR ORBAN!

Szoboszlai's corner is a low and hard-hit one which Orban meets on the run in front of goal, but his header goes just wide at the near post.

PASSION ON SHOW!

Mainz doing everything to hold onto this lead here in the closing minutes. What a way to start the season this would be for Bo Svensson's side.
82'

BROBBEY DEBUT

The summer signing from Ajax comes on for Mukiele here to make his Bundesliga debut. Leipzig with a host of attacking talent on the pitch, but no way through so far.
80'

SABITZER BOOKED

Forsberg has a free-kick blocked and Niakhate breaks with the ball before being brought down by Sabitzer on the counter.
78'

NOT SITTING BACK

The home side are still pushing on when they can here in search of a second goal to provide a cushion heading into the final 10 minutes. Hack heads down a corner which Burkardt controls in front of Gulacsi with his back to goal, but he can't get a shot away before reinforcements arrive to clear.
77'

HWANG OFF TARGET

Mukiele finds space down the right but his cross into the middle is put wide by Hwang at the near post. That came just moments after the Frenchman saw a shot blocked in front of goal by Hack with Leipzig getting closer to an equaliser.
74'

MAINZ DENIED

Hack thinks he has a second for Mainz as he smashes home at the back post after Nebel's corner into the Leipzig area. However, the ball goes out of play behind Gulacsi's goal before coming back into play.

ZENTNER UP FOR IT!

Mainz's goalkeeper has been kept quiet despite Leipzig's pressure, thanks to the defence in front of him. But a chance opens up for Szoboszlai to latch onto a loose ball into the area which he tries to push past Zentner to slot home. But Mainz's No.1 stays with him and keeps it out despite the offside flag being raised on the near side. The goalkeeper lets out a big roar in response.

20 MINUTES TO GO!

Mainz are on course for a big win to start the season, with several first-team players sidelined on this opening weekend against Leipzig. Can they hold on to their lead?
69'

DRINKS BREAK

With the weather hovering at around 30 degrees in Mainz this afternoon, the players take a drinks break midway through the second half.

CHANCES FOR SIMAKAN!

Mukiele does well on the right to battle for space to send the ball into the Mainz area low across the ground. It comes to Simakan in front of goal, but Zentner makes a fine save to put it behind. The summer signing then heads the following corner wide from 12 yards out.
camera-photo

SILVA ON THE HUNT

Leipzig's big summer signing has had two shots so far - joint-most with Nkunku for Leipzig - but has failed to force Zentner into making a crucial save so far.
55'

SOLID STARTING DEBUTS

Tauer and Nebel are both making their starting debuts for Mainz today, and both have made big impacts. Tauer has been on the ball most often for the hosts and won 60% of his challenges, while Nebel has covered the most distance of any Mainz player.
54'

FORSBERG DENIED!

Leipzig come closest to an equaliser as Nkunku's flick-on finds Forsberg in front of goal, but with tight man-marking, he's unable to get a clean shot away before Mainz can clear.
53'

BREAK FOR BARREIRO

Some bleeding from the nose has forced Barreiro off here. The key man in midfield should be back on the pitch once again shortly.
51'

NEBEL GOES CLOSE!

Gulacsi prevents Mainz from going into a two-goal lead as Mainz break down the right flank. It's a tight cut-back into the middle from the byline by Widmer and Nebel slides in ahead of Simakan to poke the ball at goal, with Gulacsi forced to make a tidy save.
48'

NEBEL BOOKED

A heavy challenge from Nebel on Adams gets him a yellow card early in the second half.
46'

BACK UNDERWAY!

No changes at the break for either side as we get things rolling once more for the second half in Mainz.

ADDED TIME!

We'll have three minutes of time added on at the end of the first half here in Mainz.
40'

APPROACHING THE BREAK

Mainz haven't had a shot on goal since the 12th minute, with each of the last three coming from Leipzig. The away side have been in control of the tempo, but Mainz are not allowing them easy goings around their penalty area.
39'

FIRST SHOT IN ANGER

A moment of space opens up for Nkunku and he takes aim from 20 yards, but his effort is blocked away by the Mainz defence. A small amount of frustration starting to creep in for Leipzig here as we approach the break.

The home side's lead hasn't come easy so far in the first half.

ANGELINO INVOLVED

Both sides have mostly been going down the left flank so far when moving forward and it's Angelino who looks to be the biggest threat for Leipzig so far. He's looking to find Silva in the middle but so far, no luck.
32'

BUILDING SLOWLY

Everything Leipzig have done going forward so far has been at a slower pace than that of their hosts. Marsch's side have enjoyed a good few minutes of consistent possession, but the Mainz backline and shape of their defence have still yet to give up any clear-cut chances.

BIG CHALLENGE!

What a tackle from Niklas Tauer after Leipzig look destined to equalise. There's a three-man counter underway and it's Nkunku who brings the ball into the Mainz area, and as he looks to move onto his right foot to shoot a flying challenge comes in from 20-year-old Tauer to take both Nkunku and the ball out of the equation. Superb defending, and the home crowd loved that one!

MOOD IN MAINZ SO FAR

It's been a fun Sunday in the sunshine for the home side so far, who are deservedly ahead against Leipzig.
24'

THE THORN IN LEIPZIG'S SIDE

Niakhate's goal was his sixth in the Bundesliga. Four of those have come in home games against Leipzig.
22'

GAMEPLAN IS WORKING

Leipzig have had most of the ball so far, but Mainz have stayed compact in defence and latched onto every chance to win possession back so far. When going forward, they're finding space and stretching the pitch and not allowing Leipzig the opportunity to press them back. It's been a fantastic start for Svensson's side.
17'

ONE-WAY TRAFFIC

If Mainz can keep up this pace, it could be another difficult afternoon for Leipzig at the Mewa Arena.

INTENSE START!

Mainz have the lead and are pushing for more as Burkardt breaks down the right and earns his side another corner. It's loud here in Mainz, and Leipzig have struggled to deal with the home crowd and the home side's fast start.
13'

NIAKHATE FOR THE LEAD!

Captain Niakhate scores the first goal of the season for Mainz and it's a deserved lead. A corner swings in from the far side which Hack heads at goal, and it bounces up for Mukiele to clear. The Leipzig defence completely miscues his clearances, though, and it loops to the back post where fellow Frenchman Niakhate is on hand to poke home ahead of Gulacsi. What a start for Mainz!

LEIPZIG SLOWLY BUILDING

It's not been the brightest of starts from Leipzig here, although they have had over 60 percent of the possession in the opening 10 minutes. No clear-cut chances have come the way of Marsch's side as they continue to warm into this one.
7'

KAMPL BOOKED

An early yellow card for Kampl who brings down Barreiro late in midfield.
5'

FIRST CHANCE!

Mainz come forward for the first time and it's Lee who glances a header at goal which beats Gulacsi at his near post and comes back out off it to Nebel, who then fires his shot wide across goal.

MINUTE'S SILENCE

Both games today will mark a minute's silence in memory of Gerd Müller after his passing today at the age of 75.

KICK-OFF COMING UP!

The warm-ups are finishing up with the sun shining in Mainz as we're quickly approaching kick-off at the Mewa Arena. Will Mainz cause an upset on the opening weekend, or will Leipzig make a winning start to the new campaign? Let's find out...

NEW ATTACKING FIREPOWER

Forsberg, Christopher Nkunku and Marcel Sabitzer shared the lead at the top of Leipzig’s scoring charts last season, with seven Bundesliga goals apiece, but Olmo had a direct hand in the most goals overall (five of his own, plus nine assists). Now, with Silva, Brobbey and Szoboszlai all in the squad, there is a chance we sent plenty more top scorers come out of this impressive squad.

WATCH: LEIPZIG'S NEW STAR - ANDRE SILVA

Andre Silva has scored 40 goals in 57 Bundesliga appearances, all for Eintracht Frankfurt before his move to Leipzig this summer. This is what RBL fans can expect from their big summer signing.

MAGIC MAINZ UNDER SVENSSON

Bo Svensson has a better record as Mainz head coach than esteemed predecessors Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel (W9, D6, L5). The tactician took Mainz from second-bottom of the Bundesliga in January to safety last season, collecting the six-most points of any team in the league in his 20 games in charge during 2020/21. Now it's about building on that revival.

TALE OF THE TAPE

Leipzig have won six of their 10 Bundesliga meetings with Mainz, scoring more goals against the 05ers than any other club (33).

MAINZ TEAM NEWS

Boetius goes into the season as one of Mainz’s focal points in attack, but the Dutchman is unavailable the Dutchman is unavailable on the opening weekend. The hosts are also without Szalai, Eintracht Frankfurt loanee Kohr, St. Juste, Onisiwo and new signing Lucoqui. The 05ers came through a nerve-jangling penalty shootout in the first round of the DFB Cup last weekend to beat fourth-tier Elversberg 8-7 after Burkardt had scored late equalisers in normal and then extra-time. Summer signing Stach got both assists, but serves a league suspension carried over from his time with Greuther Fürth. Fellow newcomers Widmer and Lee start, with Hack, Tauer, Martin and Nebel also drafted in.

LEIPZIG TEAM NEWS

With Olmo still resting after his Euro 2020 and Olympic adventures, both Nkunku and Forsberg will play off new striker Silva, who finished second in last season’s Bundesliga scoring chart behind Lewandowski on 28 goals. After two years under Nagelsmann, the Marsch era got off to a strong start with a 4-0 cup win at Sandhausen, which also saw Szoboszlai score on his Leipzig debut from the bench - eight months after signing. American Adams plays alongside Kampl in midfield, while Simakan is Orban’s new partner at centre-back after the departures of Upamecano and Konate.

THE PASSING OF GERD MÜLLER

While we're looking forward to the two games on show this afternoon, today is a terribly sad day in German football as we and the rest of world football mourn the passing of Gerd Müller. 'Der Bomber' was a true icon of the game, a four-time Bundesliga champion, one-time winner of the Ballon d'Or and the league's all-time record goalscorer with 365 Bundesliga goals in 427 league games between 1964 and 1979, Müller is one of the greatest players in the history of German and world football.

SUNDAY DOUBLE-HEADER!

We've seen Bayern and Dortmund in action, but what of Leipzig? Today's the day for Jesse Marsch's first Bundesliga outing as a head coach as his side take on Mainz in the first of two games in the Bundesliga's opening weekend today.

Welcome along!
