Heidenheim's task is simple - they must win to have any chance of staying in the division automatically. However, if Hoffenheim beat Wolfsburg, Heidenheim's result will be irrelevant and will mean they can finish no higher than 16th. That combination of results, though, would at least guarantee Heidenheim the relegation play-off spot IF Holstein Kiel lose to Freiburg.

With three wins, three draws four losses from their last ten games, Heidenheim have picked up enough form to keep them in the survival conversation. Before the start of that run, they had lost five consecutive games between the middle of January and the middle of February.

Union are one of just two teams that Heidenheim are yet to lose against in a Bundesliga match. The other is Bremen, whom Schmidt's side face on Matchday 34. The visitors must win in the capital to give themselves any chance of surviving automatically on the final day.
