"I've had the opportunity to play against Marcel Rapp and his team several times before. These were always tactically shaped matches, but both teams also play with strong man-marking, so it'll be an intense fixture. Kiel were relegated from the Bundesliga and had to sort themselves out at the beginning of the season. But when you look at their quality, they are by no means average."

Mixed memories

Torsten Lieberknecht has never lost as a head coach against Marcel Rapp teams, but experienced one of his most bitter moments against Kiel. On 13 May 2018, a 6-2 defeat as Eintracht Braunschweig head coach sealed their relegation from the second tier. His contract was invalid in 3. Liga, so he left the club the following day after 10 years in charge.

End of the road

Kiel have visited the Betzenberg four times so far, losing three before taking all three points in November 2023, in what was Dirk Schuster's final game as Kaiserslautern head coach.

Stats favours Red Devils

Kaiserslautern have won six of their nine competitive matches against Kiel. In the last encounter in April 2024, the Palatinate side celebrated a 3-1 away victory at the Förde, with former Kiel player Daniel Hanslik among the goalscorers.
