Full-time: Schalke 1-2 Hannover

Hannover preserve their unbeaten start to 2025 with a come-from-behind win in Gelsenkirchen. They left it very late, but remain firmly in the running to get out of Bundesliga 2. It's harsh on Schalke, who were the much better side in the first half before fading late on. They stay in mid-table.

Big chance

A cross from the right slips through to Lars Gindorf at the far post. He heads it towards the near post in the direction of Håvard Nielsen, who seems somewhat surprised and fails to make contact with the ball in the six-yard box.

End of two streaks?

Hannover are the only Bundesliga 2 team still unbeaten since the turn of the year. What's more, Breitenreiter hasn't lost in the division in 22 matches, dating back to 4 April 2014.
80'

More in that!

Mohr drives the ball forward on the counter and plays it to Karaman. He slips as he attempts to shoot from a central position, though, and the chance is gone.

The Karius factor

This would be only Schalke's fifth clean sheet this season, with two of them coming in the three matches Karius has been in goal.
68'

Denied!

Jessic Ngankam feints and cuts inside before shooting with his left foot. Karius reaches over and clears spectacularly for a corner, which comes to nothing.
62'

Nearly!

Hannover's best chance yet, but Leopold doesn't make a clean connection with his header from a corner.

Momentary pause

Kamiński has injured himself during a sliding tackle and is receiving treatment. He has to go off briefly, but then the game continues.

Half-time: Schalke 1-0 Hannover

It's a deserved lead for Schalke. They've been in total control and have Antwi-Adej's strike to show for it. Hannover have offered very little so far.

André Breitenreiter's view on Schalke

"We have played successfully and well in all away matches in the second half of the season. At the moment, it might even be a bit easier for us. We want to put in a good performance at Schalke and be successful."
camera-photo

Kees van Wonderen's view on Hannover

"They are a strong and well-organised team who haven't lost this year. They don't concede much. Nevertheless, we must find a way through. We're going for the three points."

Karaman faces former club

Kenan Karaman played for Hannover from 2014 to 2018, was relegated from the Bundesliga with the 96ers in 2016 and promoted again in 2017 - he made 56 Bundesliga (four goals) and 31 Bundesliga 2 appearances (six goals) for them.

The ultimate goal guarantee

None of the 85 competitive matches between FC Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 has ended 0-0! Schalke are clearly ahead in the overall record (48 wins, 20 wins for H96), but Hannover achieved a significant victory against the Royal Blues: in 1938, the Lower Saxony side became German champions for the first time with a 4-3 win after extra-time.

Reunion with Breitenreiter

André Breitenreiter was the manager at S04 in the 2015/16 season, finishing fifth in the Bundesliga and playing in the Europa League. The Royal Blues' squad at that time included stars such as Leroy Sané, Julian Draxler, Benedikt Höwedes, Leon Goretzka, Joël Matip, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

Positive home record

Schalke have secured eight wins and one draw in their last nine home matches against Hannover across all competitions. The last time Hannover won in Gelsenkirchen was 15 years ago (2-1 in August 2010 in the Bundesliga) when Manuel Neuer was still in goal for the hosts.

Recap

Their 1-0 victory in the sides' first meeting this season was Hannover's first in their 13th Bundesliga 2 encounter with Schalke (five draws, seven defeats) and a disappointing debut for Kees van Wonderen as Schalke coach. Former Schalke player Fabian Kunze scored the only goal four minutes in (Kunze played alongside Boris Tomiak in Schalke's U17 team in 2014/15).
