The favourites prevailed, and deservedly so, with a strong second-half showing. Wanitzek's long-range effort sparked the turnaround, and Münster simply seemed to run out of steam somewhat.

Half-time: Preußen Münster 1-0 Karlsruhe

The hosts deservedly lead at break. One of the few chances that arose was converted by Ndikom as Karlsruhe offered very little going forward. Only from a long throw-in did the Bundesliga 2 side create any danger before the break.

Münster take the lead!

The third division side are in front! Johansson wins the ball back on the right flank and seems to lose it again, but somehow Ndikom gets to the ball on the right corner of the penalty area and just has a go with his left foot. Bernat has no chance of stopping the low drive.

Maximilian Senft on facing Münster

"You can clearly see Thomas Wörle's influence. They have a clear concept in possession and good rotations within it. The cup has extremely high stakes and a very special appeal for me. It's a completely different format to the league. There are no second chances. You win and advance, or you go home and never come back."

Münster head coach Thomas Wörle on facing Karlsruhe

"They've established new routines, trying to gain dominance through possession and push the opponent deep into their own half with good positioning. For us, it's crucial that we don't allow them to exploit their strengths. We need the courage to defend, just as we need the courage to play out from the back. We have to find our own way and our own moments in the game."

Head-to-head

These sides have faced off 15 times previously, with Karlsruhe having a clear upper hand - they have won 10 of those meetings, losing just once. Last season, Karlsruhe won both Bundesliga 2 games, while they have also prevailed in all three DFB Cup clashes between the sides.

Münster's cup history

In contrast, Münster have made little impact on this tournament down the years. Their best result is a round of 16 exit, which they have achieved on four occasions. In each of the past three seasons, meanwhile, they have fallen at the first hurdle.

Karlsruhe's cup history

Karlsruhe enjoyed plenty of success in this competition in the 1950s. In fact, they were the first team to defend the title, defeating Hamburg in the 1956 final a year after getting the better of Schalke in the showpiece. They were also beaten finalists in 1960, but have reached just one other final, when they were edged out by Kaiserslautern in 1996. Their best performance in recent years was reaching the quarter-finals in 2021/22, ultimately losing to Hamburg on penalties.
