Round 1

RWE Essen Rot-Weiss Essen - STP St. Pauli St. Pauli

Stadion an der Hafenstraße(18,800 Spectators)
Tobias Reichel

Full-time: Rot-Weiss Essen 2-0 St. Pauli

Rot Weiss Essen pull off an upset by beating St. Pauli. The visitors had no answer to the goals from Janssen and Telalović, with only Kaars having had one or two chances he could, or perhaps should have converted in the first-half. He did not, however, and that came back to haunt them.

Stoppage time is underway

Four minutes are added on.
83'

Into the final stages

It no longer looks as though St. Pauli will find their way back into the match and they are staring a first-round exit in the face.
77'

Deserved booking

The scorer of the second goal obstructs Voll during a goal kick and gets booked for it. That was rather unnecessary.
76'

Abiama!

The substitute has a shot from the left side of midfield. Voll, however, raises his hands and makes the save, and it remains 2-0 for the hosts.
73'

Two fresh pairs of legs for the hosts

Things are going well for Essen as they head into the final stages with a two-goal lead. Abiama and Reisig are brought on to try to see the lead home.
69'

Little from St. Pauli

If anything, it is Essen who are delivering crosses into the opposition's penalty area and showing significantly more drive towards goal. At this rate, we are set for a minor shock.

Essen in jubilant mood

Telalović is embraced by his teammates after his strike to make it 2-0.
61'

First Substitution

St. Pauli have had no answer whatsoever to the second goal conceded so far, so Rapp tries to inject some fresh impetus from the bench and brings on Banks.
53'

Essen extend their lead!

That shouldn't have been so simple, but it was well-taken! After the visitors lose possession in the build-up, Hofmann has lots of space on the right and whips a cross to the penalty spot. Telalović runs onto it, takes the ball first time with the inside of his left foot and converts into the right corner to make it 2-0.

Kick-off!

Half-time: Rot-Weiss Essen 2-1 St. Pauli

In contrast to St. Pauli, the third-division side have shone with their clinical finishing and lead 1-0 at the break thanks to Janssen's strike. Kaars alone has had three high-quality chances, but has so far been unable to find the back of the net.

Kaars again

The striker gets a shot off before Golz, but is denied by a strong save from the Essen keeper.
44'

Yellow card for Menzel!

The Essen player can only stop Hrgota in the midfield by fouling him and is booked for it.
36'

Underdogs go in front!

Essen are ahead! Obuz leaves Oppie behind in the right and whips the ball in towards the far post. Janssen has snuck in behind Nemeth there, and heads home to make it 1-0.

Over the bar again!

This simply cannot be happening, as Kaars squanders yet another gilt-edged chance. A cross from the left flank is parried by Golz with one hand directly to the penalty spot, where the FC St. Pauli striker stands completely unmarked and shoots immediately. However, the shot flies well into the stands.
27'

First booking

Pyrka comes in late on the right side of the penalty area against the rushing-out Golz, checks him off the ball and receives the first booking of the match.
25'

St Pauli are now in the game

After the strong opening phase from the hosts, the Bundesliga 2 side are now making their presence felt, shaping the action on the pitch in a much more balanced manner and have already had what has been the biggest chance of the match so far.

St. Pauli almost take the lead

Pyrka beats Geschwill on the right and drives into the penalty area. There he lays it off - somewhat untidily - across to the unmarked Kaars, who somehow shoots over from barely six yards out. He had to score that.

St. Pauli on top?

Not quite yet, Essen have been holding their own so far.
15'

Essen getting into it

Rot-Weiss have been remarkably strong in the opening quarter of an hour and have had more of the ball than St. Pauli. However, the Essen side have not yet created any clear-cut chances.
11'

Blocked

St. Pauli fail to properly clear a corner and Hüning has a go from distance. His effort gets turned behind for another corner, which ultimately comes to nothing.
7'

Essen are well in the game

After a cross from Pesch, Telalović gets on the end of a header in the centre, but it poses no problem for Voll.
5'

New boots

Pauli's keeper reacted immediately to his little blunder and changed his boots. Let's see if he has a more secure footing now.
2'

A first attempt on goal

Voll attempts to clear a back pass, but slips before doing so and cannot get the ball far enough forward. Essen press forward and Pesch looks to capitalise on the situation from distance, but his low shot goes a few yards wide to the left.
1'

Kick-off

The match at the Hafenstraße has kicked off, with Felix Prigan the referee.

More on that St. Pauli team

St. Pauli coach Marcel Rapp makes no changes after the 2-2 draw in Kiel and sends out an identical starting XI.

Almost a league fixture

While the visitors dropped down from the Bundesliga to the second tier, the hosts came close to joining them in Bundesliga 2. Rot-Weiss Essen finished third in last season's German third division and were beaten 2-1 on aggregate in a promotion/relegation play-off by Greuther Fürth to miss out on promotion by the narrowest of margins. They won the DFB Cup in 1952/53 and were beaten in the final by Werder Bremen in 1993/94.

St. Pauli's cup history

The Hamburg-based cult club have reached the quarter-finals six times - and three of those occasions have been in the past five seasons, including last term's 3-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the last eight. They are yet to progress beyond that stage.
