Round 1

FCE FC Energie FC Energie Cottbus - FCA Augsburg Augsburg

LEAG Energie Stadion(14,388 Spectators)
Dr. Robin Braun

Full-time: Cottbus 0-2 Augsburg

The visitors proved too strong for their Bundesliga 2 opponents, although Cottbus can certainly hold their heads high despite the result. The hosts failed to convert any of their 22 chances, while two of Augsburg's six shots went in. The first arrived via Kade (r.), who fired the ball beautifully under Lotka, shortly after the restart, before substitute Jakić fired the ball into the roof of the net with the last kick of the game to send his team through to the second round of the DFB Cup.

To no avail

It's whipped in and Lotka wasn't too far away from it. Ciğerci then plays the subsequent corner short but Augsburg are able to clear.

It's a corner...

...and Lotka is coming up for it. Last chance saloon.

Into added time

The fourth official has signalled four more minutes. Can Augsburg - who bring on Kömür in place of goalscorer Kade - hold on, or can Cottbus find an equaliser?

Substitution

87'

Jakić denied

The Augsburg midfielder unleashes a curling effort from outside of the penalty, but it's saved by Lotka which quickly initiates a counter-attack, which doesn't amount to anything.
86'

Another change

Time is running out for Cottbus, who bring on Malone in place of Michelbrink.
83'

Crossbar!

Banks finds himself in an unfamiliar position. Coming in from the left, the Augsburg defender does everything right until the finish - cannoning his right-footed effort off the crossbar.
82'

Kade again!

It's almost a carbon copy of the only goal in this game. Kade races through on goal after latching on to a through ball, this time the Augsburg attacker takes it a little wider, allowing Cottbus to clear the ball behind for a corner which doesn't amount to anything.
78'

Double change

Portuguese forward Ribeiro comes on in attack, while Gregoritsch departs in place of Keitel, who offers more defensively.

Superb effort

Kade's earlier strike that is the difference between the two teams.
71'

Cottbus again!

This time it's Copado. The Cottbus attacker drives forward in a central position and unleashes a powerful shot towards goal, which is punched clear by Dahmen. Butler then finds the ball at his feet from a similar position to his effort seconds earlier, but this time it doesn't trouble Augsburg's custodian.
70'

Ambitious

Cottbus are getting a high number of shots off, but few are troubling their opponents. Butler cuts in from the left and tries a curling effort from range, but it's easily collected by Dahmen.
69'

Wide

Manu drives forward and no Augsburg player closes him down, but the Cottbus defender drags his shot well wide from range.
66'

Golden opportunity!

Michelbrink whips in a delightful cross towards the far post and into the path of Borgmann, but the Cottbus captain can't sort his feet out and it's a huge chance spurned.
64'

Defensive change

As Cottbus turn up the heat, Baum reacts by bringing on Croatian defensive midfielder Jakić.
60'

Hosts pushing

Ciğerci almost makes an instant impact, but Banks gets a crucial foot to the through ball which allows Dahmen to gather.
57'

Triple change

As Cottbus go in search of an equaliser, the Bundesliga 2 side make three changes with Ciğerci, Rorig and Butler entering the fray.
53'

Kinsombi!

Cottbus have responded positively to falling behind here. Kinsombi attacks down the left, cuts inside and uses the decoy run before unleashing a right-footed effort towards goal which is saved by Dahmen. The resulting corner is cleared by the visitors.
52'

Another booking

As Cottbus look for an instant reply, Augsburg defender Schlotterbeck bodychecks his opponent, earning him a booking and the hosts a free-kick, which is blocked by the wall.

There it is!

It didn't take Augsburg long. The hosts come out for the second period with intent. Rieder drives forward, cuts the ball inside to Gregoritsch who in turn finds Kade, who wrong-footed his marker before placing the ball under Lotka.

Cottbus get the second half going.
Kick-off!

Half-time: Cottbus 0-0 Augsburg

Both teams aren't without chances, but it's Augsburg's Dahmen who has been the busiest of the two goalkeepers. Bundesliga 2 side Cottbus will be extremely happy with their performance, while the visitors' best chances arrived via Wolf. It's all to play for after the break.

Copado denied!

The Cottbus attacker glides past Schlotterbeck and shapes up to shoot, but the Augsburg defender makes an excellent recovery run to make the block.

Level pegging

xGoals
The xGoals value of a club is calculated from the sum of all goal probabilities (goals and shots on goal) of that team. During a match, it’s easy to see whether the club is performing better than expected (goals > xGoals) - or maybe even higher (xGoals > goals).
Augsburg have only had one shot on target, but it's a level playing field in terms of the xG metric. There's very little in the two teams' finishing in the final third.

Golden opportunity!

Cottbus waste an excellent chance to take the lead. Hannemann drives forward, 1v1 with Augsburg defender Schlotterbeck, but instead of laying the ball off for his unmarked teammate, takes upon the shot himself from close range which is saved by Dahmen. That's the best chance of the half.
33'

Wolf denied

The Augsburg player drives forward down the right after latching onto Gregoritsch's through ball but with no option in the box, the German opts to himself take upon the shot himself, which is saved by Lotka.
31'

First caution

Manu is the first name in the referee's notebook after arriving late on Banks.

First sight on goal for Cottbus

The hosts' first effort arrived via Hannemann in the opening exchanges.
26'

Augsburg improving

Kade, off balance, pulls his shot wide. Augsburg are finally finding their feet, and have created two chances in quick succession.
24'

Wasteful

Massengo's corner finds the head of an unmarked Wolf, who glances his header over Lotka's crossbar.

Not much in it

Cottbus, who have registered five shots, slightly edge the possession battle (53 percent to Augsburg's 47), and the xG metric.

No way through

After Cottbus pressure, the hosts have taken the foot off the gas. It's turning into a scrappy game in the middle of the park. Both defences are standing firm, for now.
13'

Dahmen alert

Cottbus custodian Lotka launches a long ball forward over the Augsburg defence and into the path of Kinsombi, but Dahmen charges out of his box to head the ball clear. The subsequent shot from Copado from distance is then saved by Augsburg's stopper again.
11'

Another sighter

Cottbus certainly aren't afraid of trying their luck from distance. This time captain Borgmann drives his left-footed effort from range wide of Dahmen's post.
9'

Shot fired in

After withstanding early Augsburg pressure, Cottbus are seeing far more of the ball. The hosts eventually work an opening down the left but Hannemann sees his effort from just outside of the penalty area saved by Dahmen.
5'

Almost the lead!

Down at the other end, Hannemann makes an excellent run into the channel but from a tight angle, his shot hits the side netting. After a cagey opening, both teams have since found openings.
4'

First attack

Augsburg drive forward down the right flank in their first meaningful attack. Kade crosses the ball, which is blocked, but it lands at the feet of Massengo on the edge of the box - his effort is also subsequently blocked.
1'

Off we go!

Augsburg get the ball rolling in Cottbus.
Kick-off!

More on that Cottbus team

Wollitz makes three changes to the team that lost 3-0 against Arminia Bielefeld in Bundesliga 2 at the weekend. Manu comes into central defence for Rorig, which sees Erlein move across to right-back. There's no place for Bittencourt, who is out, but Borgmann (pictured) starts in midfield for the first time this season. Ciğerci also drops to the bench in place of Hannemann.

More on that Augsburg team

Manuel Baum makes two changes to the team that lost 4-0 against English Premier League side Leeds United in their final pre-season friendly. Keitel and Ogundu - both of whom are on the bench - drop out for Massengo and Kade (pictured).

Kick-off is imminent!

Claus-Dieter Wollitz on facing Augsburg

"Everyone wants to reach the second round, but we can't expect to pull off another upset; we just need to perform differently."

Manuel Baum on facing Cottbus

"Everyone is desperate to get out there and compete against other teams in a competitive setting. Cottbus are a really good team with good players and an incredibly experienced coach."

Cup experience

Cottbus coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz has taken charge of 28 cup matches in his career. In those, he's recorded 10 wins and suffered 18 defeats. His greatest success came when he led Cottbus to the semi-finals of the competition in the 2010/11 season.

Head-to-head

These two sides have faced each other four times so far. Augsburg won two of those encounters, while Cottbus have come out on top just once, with their most recent meeting coming in the 2010/11 Bundesliga 2 season and ending in a 1-1 draw.

Energie Cottbus' DFB Cup history

Like their opponents, Cottbus have had little to shout about in recent years when it comes to the cup. They did reach the second round last season, where they lost to RB Leipzig, but that was only the second time in nine years that they managed to go beyond the first round.

Augsburg's DFB Cup history

In the last five years Augsburg have only gone beyond the second round of the competition once, when they reached the quarter-finals to VfB Stuttgart in the 2024/25 campaign. Going out to the eventual champions was no mean feat, but they followed that up with a second round exit to Bochum the following season.
