Robert Lewandowski sets Bundesliga away goals record

Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski has claimed yet another Bundesliga record after notching his 18th away goal of the current campaign.

Lewandowski scored his 34th Bundesliga goal this season during the Matchday 32 defeat at Mainz, with the visitors going down to a 3-1 loss a week after being crowned champions for a tenth successive time.

While it was a disappointing day for the team, the Bayern striker's stylish swivel and left-footed finish on 33 minutes did at least see him add to his impressive record collection.

Former Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker Jupp Heynckes (in 1973/74) and Germany forward Timo Werner (in 2019/20 with RB Leipzig) had both hit 17 goals on the road in a Bundesliga season before. But Lewandowski has now surpassed that mark with what was also the 311th Bundesliga goal of his career.

The milestone is just the latest in a long line of outstanding achievements that the 33-year-old Poland captain and Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year for 2020 and 2021 will look back on in years to come.

A six-time Bundesliga leading goalscorer, he famously broke the single-season Bundesliga scoring record in the 2020/21 season. Gerd Müller - another Bayern legend - had struck 40 goals in 1971/72, but last season Lewandowski bettered that tally by scoring 41 times in just 29 league appearances.

Earlier this term the Bayern No. 9's double against his former team Borussia Dortmund also saw him set the record for the most career goals away from home in the Bundesliga.

Lewandowski is second on the all-time list of leading goalscorers in the Bundesliga, with Müller still out on top in that category with a record of 365 goals in 427 appearances in the German top flight.
