How do Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy compare?

Der Klassiker rarely needs an extra storyline, given its history and potential impact on the title race. But when Bayern Munich host Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena on Matchday 8, the heavyweight duel between Harry Kane and Serhou Guirassy adds another compelling subplot.

Guirassy has twice finished runner-up to Kane in the race for the Torjägerkanone since the Englishman joined Bayern, before placing third last season. Yet finishing behind a striker who has redefined goalscoring standards in the Bundesliga is no slight against the Guinea international. If anything, it underlines just how elite Dortmund’s No.9 has become, even as Kane has made history by winning the award three seasons in a row before scooping the 2026 Ballon d'Or.

Across 141 Bundesliga appearances for Cologne, VfB Stuttgart and Dortmund, Guirassy has scored 83 goals, 67 of them in 108 games for BVB following four seasons in France. He also holds Stuttgart’s record for the most goals in a single Bundesliga campaign, having struck 28 times in 28 appearances in 2023/24.

He followed that up with another prolific season in Dortmund’s famous black and yellow, scoring 21 Bundesliga goals to become only the second player to surpass that mark in consecutive campaigns for different clubs.

Guirassy has made his mark in Europe, too, finishing joint-top scorer in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League with 13 goals, alongside Barcelona’s Raphinha.

Guirassy was less prolific last season, although his 17 Bundesliga goals were still enough to finish third in the scoring charts. With seven goals in all competitions already this term, however, the Guinea international looks back to his razor-sharp best.

“Strikers always have to go through a slump now and then. The important thing is to come out of it,” said Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač earlier this year. If 17 league goals constitute a slump for a striker of Guirassy’s calibre, Bayern have every reason to fear his return to form.

And few strikers have struck fear into Bundesliga defences quite like Kane since his arrival in Bavaria.

The England captain’s impact has been seismic. Having claimed the Torjägerkanone in each of his first three Bundesliga seasons, he has already scored 10 goals in 12 appearances in all competitions this term, including four assists in his first seven league outings.

Kane’s creativity has been just as impressive as his goalscoring, underlining his value as a complete forward. Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany recently praised the England captain’s intelligence and influence across the pitch.

“He’s everywhere and is a player who makes the right decisions incredibly often,” the Belgian said after Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal.

Kane has also continued to deliver in Europe, scoring four times in Bayern’s opening three Champions League fixtures to sit joint-top of the competition’s scoring charts alongside several others, including Dortmund counterpart Guirassy.

His remarkable form over the past year was recognised on Monday night when Kane claimed the Ballon d’Or, football’s most prestigious individual honour.

“Harry is an asset to Bayern and would be to any team in the world,” said board member for sport Max Eberl. “He takes responsibility, on the pitch and in the dressing room; he’s someone who everyone else follows, day after day. This title is the reward for his impressive career achievements as a whole.”

Dortmund know all too well that Kane loves facing them. The England captain has scored eight goals in nine competitive meetings with BVB, four for Bayern and four for former club Tottenham Hotspur.

Yet focusing solely on Kane’s remarkable goalscoring record would overlook his all-round brilliance. The Bayern No.9 regularly drops into midfield to link play and even contributes defensively, making him a threat well beyond the penalty area.

Dortmund saw that first-hand in the previous league Klassiker, when Kane operated in a deeper role and still found the net in a 2-1 Bayern victory.

By the same token, judging Guirassy on goals alone would overlook his wider contribution. Dortmund’s No.9 has won more duels than Kane (61 to 44) and recorded significantly more sprints (98 to 16) across their opening seven Bundesliga appearances of the campaign, underlining the different ways the two strikers influence a game.

Kane may have the edge in several key attacking metrics, but both are among Europe’s most complete forwards, capable of deciding a game in an instant. With defending champions Bayern and Dortmund locked together at the top of the table, their individual battle could prove decisive in one of the most intriguing Der Klassiker clashes in recent years.
