The much-anticipated meeting of the Bellingham brothers at the FIFA Club World Cup will, sadly, not be taking place when Borussia Dortmund face Real Madrid at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Saturday due to Jobe Bellingham picking up a yellow-card suspension in BVB's last-16 victory against Monterrey.

Having previously been booked in the Black-Yellows' group stage encounter against Ulsan, Bellingham junior picked up his second yellow of the tournament in the first half of the 2-1 victory over Monterrey, thus ruling the new signing out of the blockbuster match-up with Real and a chance to face brother Jude for the first time.

"We all saw how disappointed [Jobe] was," Dortmund coach Niko Kovač said after the game. "At half-time, I don't think he knew that that second yellow card meant a suspension," the tactician continued.

Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, added, "[Jobe] was really looking forward to playing against his brother; it's a very bitter moment for him. We have to console him a touch."

Despite the setback for the 19-year-old, coach Kovač remained philosophical, saying, “He’s young and so is his brother; I’m certain they'll face each other again in the the future, maybe even in next season's [UEFA] Champions League."

Dortmund and Real Madrid met twice in the Champions League in 2024, with the Spanish side pipping Die Schwarzgelben to the title in the tournament final before the sides faced off in last season's new league phase, a game from which Real also emerged triumphant.

This weekend's meeting offers the Bundesliga side a shot at revenge, with a place in the Club World Cup semi-final against either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain at stake.
