Can Borussia Dortmund end their VfB Stuttgart slump on Matchday 28?

Borussia Dortmund will travel to Champions League hopefuls VfB Stuttgart on Matchday 28 with their sights set on an unlikely, but still possible, late sprint to the Bundesliga title. To do that, however, they’ll have to overcome a side who they’re winless again in their last seven games.

That winless run began in the 2022/23 season, when the two sides played out a captivating 3-3 draw at the MHPArena, with Die Schwarzgelben having stormed to a 5-0 win in their previous meeting in Dortmund.

Current BVB stars Waldemar Anton and Serhou Guirassy were still part of the Swabians’ ranks then, playing their part in Stuttgart’s close encounter with relegation that season. Having dispatched Hamburg in the relegation play-off, winning 6-1 over the two legs, Sebastian Hoeneß’s side ensured at least two more meetings with Dortmund in the following season.

And this time, Guirassy would get himself on the scoresheet. The Guinean goal-getter snatched a late winner as his side ran out 2-1 winners on home turf, with their current talisman Deniz Undav netting the first in their impressive comeback after Niclas Füllkrug had opened the scoring.

A 2-0 win in the DFB Cup less than a month later would follow, before the Swabians completed their hat-trick for the 2023/24 campaign with a narrow 1-0 win at Signal Iduna Park – and yes, Guirassy scored the winning goal; in fact, he netted in all three of their wins that season!

That wouldn’t be possible in the 2024/25 campaign though, with both Guirassy and Anton swapping white and red for black and yellow ahead of the new season. Having both played pivotal roles in Stuttgart’s unexpected climb to second the previous term, Dortmund hoped they could have a similar impact on a side who had finished sixth in 2023/24.

The duo’s first trip back to their old stomping ground perhaps came sooner than expected, as the two sides clashed on Matchday 4. It certainly appeared to come as a surprise to Dortmund, who were two goals down after 20 minutes and trailed by three at the hour mark. Guirassy netted his customary goal in this fixture with 15 minutes left to play, but it became nothing more than a consolation goal as the hosts bagged two more goals before the game’s conclusion, wrapping up a miserable afternoon for the Ruhr side.

Despite a change of location to their beloved Signal Iduna Park and a change of manager, with Niko Kovač taking over from Nuri Şahin ahead of the return fixture, BVB still couldn’t get the better of Hoeneß’s men, falling to a 2-1 home defeat in early February. Guirassy didn’t get his goal in this game, but Anton did, opening the scoring for his former side with an own goal shortly after half-time.

That made it five defeats on the bounce for Dortmund, a streak Kovač’s side finally managed to put an end to earlier this season with another 3-3 draw. Having been two goals to the good at half-time, BVB were eventually pegged back by an Undav brace going into the final 20 minutes. Karim Adeyemi edged his side in front in the 89th minute, at which point it looked like he’d stolen all three points for his side.

Fellow Germany international Undav had the last word though, completing his hat-trick and making sure the points were shared just a minute later, extending Dortmund’s winless run in the process.

That was one of seven draws so far for BVB this season, who have only lost two games up until now and sit eight points ahead of Stuttgart in second. They face another trip to the MHPArena next, where the hosts have only lost once from 13 games in 2025/26.
