Serhou Guirassy-inspired Borussia Dortmund into FIFA Club World Cup quarter-finals with Monterrey win
Serhou Guirassy scored a first-half brace as Borussia Dortmund advanced to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarter-finals with a narrow win over Mexico's Monterrey.
Unbeaten at the finals after topping Group F, Dortmund set the tone in Atlanta with the opening goal just 14 minutes in. Karim Adeyemi did brilliantly to hold up the ball before dropping off a pass for Guirassy, who dispatched a confident strike into the bottom corner.
Monterrey rallied as Jesús Corona sent a mishit cross against the woodwork and tested Gregor Kobel in a promising one-on-one that was called back for offside. Jobe Bellingham went within a whisker of adding a second at the other end, before Guirassy swept in following an incisive counter to give BVB daylight.
The Guinean missed a couple of golden chances to put the result beyond any doubt, while Kobel had to be alert to stop Corona sneaking a finish in at his near post late in the first half.
Dortmund's momentum was checked after the restart when Germán Berterame headed in from close range to halve the deficit. Érick Aguirre then went clean through on goal, only for Kobel to make a crucial block at his near post.
Monterrey kept coming as Beteramé had an emphatic finish ruled out for offside, prompting a double change from Dortmund head coach Niko Kovač. Julian Brandt and Yan Couto were introduced, with the latter wasting little time in setting up Guirassy for a run and shot blocked at close quarters by a swarm of white shirts.
More importantly, the substitutions had a galvanising effect that enabled Dortmund to retake control of the midfield. Sergio Ramos headed inches wide in one final throw of the Monterrey kitchen sink as BVB marched on to set up a quarter-final tie with Xabi Alonso's Real Madrid in New Jersey on 5 July.

Fresh legs
Brandt's joined by Yan Couto as Kovač shows his hand. Felix Nmecha and Adeyemi, who's faded since setting up those first-half goals for Guirassy, make way.
Julian Brandt's getting ready to come on. The Black-Yellows have been outplayed since the restart and need to get a foothold in the game.

Twelfth man
This feels more like a home game for Monterrey as they win a corner. Their fans are making a real racket. Luckily for Dortmund, there's nothing at the end of the set-piece for them to shout about.

Disallowed goal
Berterame finds the bottom corner from inside the BVB box, but the flag was up and it's chalked off. The Monterrey goalscorer went too early.

Monterrey keep coming
Dortmund's defensive line is caught out again as Corona collects a long ball over the top and scampers away from Bensebaini. He has a teammate in the centre, but instead sends a rising drive past the upright from the tightest of angles.

Kobel does his job
Aguirre's played clean through on the Dortmund goal, but Kobel waits and waits for the shot before making a crucial block at his near post.

Monterrey are in again, but Corona elects to pass rather than shoot and the chance is gone in a huge let-off for BVB.

Monterrey back in it!
Not what Dortmund wanted. Aguirre heads a cross against the back of Svensson, with the ball ballooning up and over to Berterame. With the BVB defence at sixes and sevens, he calmly heads it across goal and past Kobel to give the Mexicans a fighting chance.
No changes in Atlanta, with Dortmund holding all the cards in this last-16 clash.
Half-time: Dortmund 2-0 Monterrey
Guirassy's brace has BVB 45 minutes or so from a place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The Black-Yellows have been superb and could arguably be three or even four goals to the good.
Dortmund haven't done much wrong, but a Monterrey goal before the break will change the complexion of the game entirely.

Danger signs
Monterrey hit Dortmund on the break after Adeyemi loses possession, but Corona overcooks his final pass when he might have been better going it alone.

Right idea
Ramos tries to ping a cross-field pass from left to right, but it has just too much on it for Corona, who looked like he might have had the jump on Bensebaini.

Huge save!
Andrada makes himself big to stop Guirassy firing in Groß's cut-back from the edge of the six-yard area. The BVB No.9 usually buries chances like that!

A whisker away!
Bellingham pokes a pass across the six-yard box for Guirassy, who toes narrowly wide on the stretch. So close to his hat-trick!

Denied!
Kobel dives to his left to beat clear another Deossa rocket. The Monterrey midfielder certainly doesn't need an invitation to shoot.

Suspended
Gutting for Jobe, who's booked for a late challenge that rules him out of the potential showdown with brother Jude in the last eight.
BVB are in dreamland! Ryerson dispossesses his man in the Dortmund half and immediately looks for Adeyemi, who does really well under pressure from a handful of white shirts. Guirassy catches up and collects his strike partner's inside pass, before sweeping home from 18 yards. That's how to counter!
Jobe's unmarked in the six-yard box as he stoops to head in Ryerson's right-wing cross, but a Monterrey defender sticks out a boot just as he motions to touch it goalwards. The ensuing corner comes to nothing.

Action stations!

Goal-rassy!

Kick-off!
Pre-match noise
Plenty of fans in attendance for this one, with a LOT of Mexicans making the trip.
Julian Ryerson hopeful of steady improvement
"Often, the teams that start a little slowly and then improve towards the end win tournaments," the Norwegian full-back said after BVB finished top of Group F on seven points. "I hope we can perform better than we have so far, but the most important thing is to progress. When there’s a tournament, you want to win it."
This is the final game of the round of 16. Bayern are already through, the Bundesliga champions setting up a meeting with PSG in the next round. In the other quarter-final ties, Fluminense take on Al-Hilal and Chelsea face Palmeiras. As mentioned, Real await the winner of this one at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey on Saturday.
Jobe mode
This'll be Jobe's fourth appearance and third start for Dortmund. After a second-half cameo against Fluminense, the 19-year-old scored on his full debut (vs. Mamelodi) and notched an assist on his second outing for the club (vs. Ulsan).
More on Monterrey
Full-backs Chavez and Reyes are replaced by Aguirre and Arteaga, while Jorge Rodriguez and Canales come in for Ambriz and Alvarado as Torrent makes four changes to the team that started the 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds.
Cardenas, Mele, Chavez, Gustavo Sanchez, Guzman, Moreno, L. Reyes, Ambriz, Fimbres, A. Gonzalez, Rojas, Alvarado, Cortizo, de la Rosa, Ocampos
Bellingham vs. Bellingham?
Jobe makes his third straight start, after registering goal involvements against Mamelodi and Ulsan. If BVB progress, the English teen will have the chance to face brother Jude in the quarter-finals after Real Madrid beat Juventus 1-0 in their last-16 clash in Miami.
Niklas Süle returns on the right-hand side of the back three, with Julian Ryerson moving into a more advanced position. Yan Couto drops to a bench that once again includes the likes of Julian Brandt, Marcel Sabitzer and Gio Reyna.
The numbers paint an interesting picture ahead of this game. BVB have had more shots on goal (14.3 on average per game) than Monterrey (10.7) so far in the tournament, but the number of goals scored (1.7 on average) is the same for both sides. However, the quality of Dortmund's chances has been higher: BVB's xGoals is 1.7 per game compared to just 1.1 for the Mexicans. Also, while the Black Yellows have only conceded 33 shots on goal compared to Monterrey's 43, they have conceded more goals (three) than their last-16 counterparts (1).
Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto talk Monterrey and 2025/26
BVB defenders Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto speak about what they expect from Monterrey, and a little on their hopes for the new season.
Sebastian Kehl on Monterrey and Sergio Ramos
"We worked hard for this match through the group stage. The games weren't easy, and Monterrey certainly won't be an easy opponent either. But we're looking forward to a different atmosphere in Atlanta, a different time of day, a special stadium, and certainly a lot of emotion and passion against a very, very good team. I've played against Ramos a few times. A team always wants a player like that because he embodies a lot. Playing against him is sometimes uncomfortable, but we're prepared for that."
For each of the two teams, a win in the round of 16 will mean coming up against either Real Madrid or Juventus in the quarter-final. Real topped group H consisting of Al Hilal, RB Salzburg and Pachuca, while Juventus were runners-up in Group G, containing Manchester City, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca.
"We have to start well. And I think that's the key: that we put the opponent under pressure immediately, that we take advantage of our chances, and, of course, that we play together. It won't be an easy game. I think they're a very robust and tough team".
"I think they'll play very aggressively, look for challenges a lot, and then try to counterattack. We have to hold our own; that will be very important."
Kovač put his players through their paces at the team's base in Florida on Saturday, with three more days to prepare for Tuesday's assignment in Atlanta.

Watch: Niko Kovač: "We're up against a very tough and serious opponent"
The Borussia Dortmund boss gives his thoughts on his side's last-16 opponents Monterrey, and their evergreen defender Sergio Ramos.
Already in the history books
This will be the first time that Borussia Dortmund have faced a side from Mexico. Likewise, Monterrey have never faced a team from Germany before, adding all the more intrigue to this knockout clash.
Taking the reigns
Having been assistant to Pep Guardiola during three Club World Cup wins across spells at Barcelona and Bayern, Domenec Torrent also knows what it takes to win the competition, and will be determined to take the crown as first in charge this time around.
BVB boss Niko Kovač isn't a stranger to winning an intercontinental competition, having started in Bayern Munich's 1-0 win over Boca Juniors in the 2001 Intercontinental Cup final.
"We've won the group. I've been watching a lot of the Club World Cup and there are currently not so many teams that are really shining, that make you say: amazing football. The tempo is definitely different from what we're used to in Europe."
"We wanted to get through the group phase, we wanted to reach the round of 16. We've managed that. You cannot choose whether you finish first or second. Now we’re in first place, have an extra day to rest and then travel to Atlanta to play in a beautiful stadium."
The Mexican side have been equally impressive so far this tournament, conceding just once across three games against Inter Milan, River Plate and and Urawa Red Diamonds. They're also unbeaten, having drawn against Inter (1-1) and River Plate (0-0) and beating Urawa 4-0. They have former Spain and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos commanding their backline, and they'll hope he can help guide them past Dortmund and eventually toward a best ever Club World Cup finish, with the club's best finish at the tournament until now being third, achieved in both 2012 and 2019.
BVB are yet to lose in this competition, winning two and drawing one of their group games. While they did concede three in their 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, it's the only game in which they've conceded so far, keeping clean sheets against both Flamengo (0-0) and Ulsan HD (1-0). Niko Kovač hasn't shuffled his starting lineup around too much in their opening games, meaning that the Black Yellows are firmly in their stride ahead of their meeting with Monterrey.
