Will Michael Olise outshine Lamine Yamal in France vs. Spain FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals?

All eyes will be on Dallas as France and Spain do battle in the first semi-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026 - with particular attention on each nation's superstar in the making, Michael Olise of Bayern Munich and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal.

Continuing to hit new dizzying heights, Olise - who was voted Bundesliga’s Player of the Season for 2025/26 - bettered his phenomenal 27 goal contributions achieved in his maiden 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign.

He returned 15 goals and a league-high 19 assists in 32 games, helping Bayern retain their league crown and end a six-year wait for the DFB Cup. The tricky Frenchman - who sat in the top 10 for several metrics, including shots, sprints, and intensive runs per 90 minutes, whilst registering 15 goal involvements in the UEFA Champions League and DFB Cup - continues his exponential rise.

What makes Michael Olise so unique?

While Olise has done the vast majority of his devastating work for Bayern wide on the right, earning him a reputation as one of the world's best wingers, the London native has been used centrally for France at his first World Cup, with Didier Deschamps acknowledging early in the tournament that he wants his most creative player more involved in the middle. It has seen Ballon d'Or winner and former Borussia Dortmund attacker Ousmane Dembélé moved out to the right.

Carrying his red-hot form over to North America with him, Olise is on the cusp of greatness. His elegance and vision has led to five assists in six games, leaving Bayern’s dazzling winger on the brink of equalling Brazil legend Pelé’s single-tournament record of six, which he set during the 1970 edition in Mexico.

A gamechanger, Deschamps lauded his playmaker in the wake of France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal on Matchday 1. “Michael is able to play between two lines, the midfield and the defence, and find the forwards, whether it’s Kylian [Mbappé] or Désiré Doué or Bradley Barcola,” he explained.

“He can play on both sides, but the more often he gets on the ball, the better. It created more danger.”

Looking to halt France’s and Olise’s progress is Yamal. The young attacker has previous semi-final history against Les Bleus - scoring the equalising goal at UEFA Euro 2024 in Bayern’s Allianz Arena. La Roja won the tournament under Luis de la Fuente before Yamal netted a brace in last season’s UEFA Nations League final four.

At domestic level, Barcelona’s No.10 had an equally impressive campaign, plundering 16 goals and providing 11 assists in 28 matches as former Bayern coach Hansi Flick’s side retained their La Liga crown, but - with only one goal contribution in six games - is yet to set his maiden World Cup alight, unlike his French counterpart.

“The best is yet to come, because he hasn’t yet reached the level of brilliance we expect,” acknowledged De la Fuente, who admires his starlet’s tenacity. “The other day, he showed tremendous maturity, working hard in defence until he was completely exhausted.”

Earning glowing praise from compatriot Thierry Henry, Olise continues his upward trajectory on the world stage as France look to reclaim their 2018 crown, while Yamal bids to take Spain to their second-ever World Cup final.

Whatever the outcome, 2026’s first semi-final promises to be an unmissable clash.
