DFB Cup holders Bayern Munich hit Magdeburg for six to reach last 16
Michael Olise continued his scintillating form, netting twice and providing an assist for Ismail Saibari to send DFB Cup holders Bayern Munich through to the round of 16 after overcoming Bundesliga 2 high-flyers Magdeburg.
Bayern Munich 6-1 Magdeburg
Goals: 1-0 Olise 10’ (assist: Saibari), 1-1 Żukowski 15’ (assist: Chávez), 2-1 Saibari 21’ (assist: Olise), 3-1 Olise 51’ (pen.), 4-1 Davies 70’ (assist: Karl), 5-1 Brown 73’ (assist: Davies), 6-1 Santos Daiber 90’+3 (assist: Stanišić)
Bayern made two changes from their last outing, with Ismael Saibari and Hiroki Ito coming into the side in place of newly crowned Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane and Dayot Upamecano.
Magdeburg, the Bundesliga 2 side, lined up unchanged from their 6-1 win over Karlsruhe, with Bayern loanee Felipe Chávez starting in midfield for the visitors.
Early strikes settle a lively opening half
Bayern broke the deadlock after ten minutes when a through ball from Lennart Karl found Saibari in behind, and the Moroccan laid the ball across for Olise to tap home into an empty net.
Magdeburg responded just five minutes later when Chávez sent Mateusz Żukowski away on the counter. The forward cut inside from the left before firing past Jonas Urbig from range.
Bayern regained their lead on 21 minutes when Olise released Saibari, who took a superb first touch before lifting the ball over the advancing Dominik Reimann to give Germany's record champions a 2-1 lead at the interval.
Penalty opens the floodgates
On at the break, Alphonso Davies made immediate impact. He was brought down in the box by Pierre Nadjombe, and Olise stepped up to dink a penalty past the diving Reimann in the 50th minute to make it 3-1.
Magdeburg continued to create chances, with Reimann denying both Tom Bischof and Karl, before Bayern pulled further clear when Davies poked home a cross from Karl in the 70th minute, before turning provider himself three minutes later, knocking a Karl pass down for Nathaniel Brown to finish from close range for 5-1.
Deep into stoppage time, David Santos Daiber, on as a substitute, added a sixth after being set up by Josip Stanišić, sending the holders through to the last 16.
