Olise hunting down Pelé's record

Bayern's lethal winger is now just one assist short of equalling the Brazilian icon's record for providing the most assists at a single tournament. Pelé provided six assists at the 1970 World Cup, a total that Olise is just one short of equalling.

Bayern's incredible World Cup record

There has been a Bayern Munich player in every World Cup final since 1982. France duo Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano will be looking to continue that run by beating Spain. Should they fail, however, then England's Harry Kane is still going on the other side of the tournament tree.

Head-to-head

The two European powerhouses have met 38 times in their history, with Spain winning 18 and France 13. The Spaniards have also scored 71 goals in comparison to 44 for the French. Spain have won the last two meetings, including a 2-1 semi-final victory at Euro 2024. However, France won the last World Cup meeting between the two 3-1 back in 2006. Franck Ribéry scored the first French goal on that occasion.

How they got here: France

France have looked the team to beat from the off in this tournament. In the group phase, they scored 10 goals and conceded just two as they comfortably beat Senegal, Iraq and a much-changed Norway. In the round of 32, France thrashed Sweden 3-0 before overcoming a stubborn Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16. In the quarters, France once again kept a clean sheet as they beat Morocco 2-0 to reach the semis.

How they got here: Spain

After stuttering to a 0-0 draw with Cabo Verde in their opener, Spain have gradually grown into the tournament, sweeping aside Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to top their group. A 3-0 win then saw them breeze past Austria in the round of 32 before back-to-back late winners from Mikel Merino saw Spain make the final four.
