Luis Díaz 'happy' at Bayern Munich and ready for maiden Klassiker at Borussia Dortmund
In the midst of a remarkable maiden season in the Bundesliga, Luis Díaz’s biggest challenge in a Bayern Munich shirt so far could well come at Signal Iduna Park against Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker, a potentially pivotal encounter in deciding the destination of the Meisterschale…
Joining from Liverpool last summer, Díaz scored on his debut in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, a goal which the set the tone for the rest of the season. In 32 appearances for his new club in all competitions, the 29-year-old has scored 19 goals and provided a further 12 assists.
In the Bundesliga alone, Harry Kane is the sole player to find the back of the net more frequently than Díaz’s 13 efforts, while he sits third in the assists charts behind another teammate, Michael Olise, and Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson.

“It’s been spectacular,” Díaz told the Bundesliga when discussing his time in Germany. “Like I’ve said before, I feel really comfortable here, coming into a great team, a great club and a great institution. They’ve made me feel at home, among family.
“I’m really happy here. I’m trying to enjoy it, because that’s what it’s about, enjoying this part of football. And my family is really happy here as well.”
Although Díaz has passed almost every test with flying colours since his arrival in Bavaria, the visit to Dortmund is a different proposition. Like Bayern, the Black-Yellows have lost just one of their 22 Bundesliga games so far this campaign and have closed the gap at the top of the table to six points in recent weeks.

It will be Díaz’s first trip to Dortmund’s home ground, and he is eager to experience a Klassiker in the Ruhr. “I’ve seen Klassikers before, and they say it’s especially good to play in Dortmund because they have an amazing atmosphere, it’s a big stadium, and obviously they’re a big team.
“Games against Bayern have always been really good, so it motivates me a lot. Getting to play my first game away there, I obviously want to give my best for the team as always. And obviously, try to get a win, which is the most important thing for us.”
BVB are currently in red-hot form. Their last Bundesliga defeat came 16 games ago, at the hands of Bayern at the Allianz Arena, while they have won each of their past six. The reigning champions, meanwhile, have recovered from a two-game winless run to register 5-1 and 3-0 league victories over Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen respectively - Díaz even struck a hat-trick in the former.

This Klassiker is, therefore, a direct battle between the two main rivals for the title, and the enormity of the match is not lost on Díaz. “It’s very important for us. If we manage to win, which we’ll try to do, then it’ll obviously be important for the title,” he explained.
“I think they’re in good form and have had some good games, but we must not let up and try to get points. If we can’t win, we at least need to come away with a draw. Getting a point or three would be important for the rest of the season. If you don’t lose ground, you’ll always win. So it’s very important.”
It promises to be a season-defining match-up for both teams on Matchday 24, and if Díaz is in the mood, his impact could be decisive.
